The nastiness in this campaign just got nastier. Police in Monroe, Louisiana arrested a shotgun-toting voter for terrorism. The man, upset that he had not yet received his voter card, threatened to fire his weapon. The reason? He needed to "keep the nigger out of office".
Things are slowly getting better when it comes to race relations, but prejudice and sheer ignorance die hard. They will die a little more when this creep kicks the bucket, and good riddance when he does.
This asshole is also one of the reasons why I believe that the Bradley effect will make this race closer than most people think. Rascism and other kinds of prejudice are not quite dead yet. If we believe for a minute they are, then we are only deluding ourselves. We still have a ways to go, but a presidential campaign featuring a black man on one ticket and a woman on the other ticket is a damn good start, whether or not you believe in the policies of either. Both campaigns may be trying to outdo each other on "change", but it doesn't matter. Change has already happened, no matter who our next president is. Most of us will embrace it, but a few will go to their graves as bitter old men. Screw them, and God bless America.
