The nastiness in this campaign just got nastier. Police in Monroe, Louisiana arrested a shotgun-toting voter for terrorism. The man, upset that he had not yet received his voter card, threatened to fire his weapon. The reason? He needed to "keep the nigger out of office".

Things are slowly getting better when it comes to race relations, but prejudice and sheer ignorance die hard. They will die a little more when this creep kicks the bucket, and good riddance when he does.

This asshole is also one of the reasons why I believe that the Bradley effect will make this race closer than most people think. Rascism and other kinds of prejudice are not quite dead yet. If we believe for a minute they are, then we are only deluding ourselves. We still have a ways to go, but a presidential campaign featuring a black man on one ticket and a woman on the other ticket is a damn good start, whether or not you believe in the policies of either. Both campaigns may be trying to outdo each other on "change", but it doesn't matter. Change has already happened, no matter who our next president is. Most of us will embrace it, but a few will go to their graves as bitter old men. Screw them, and God bless America.

Why do you give a fart in a tin can?
You're voting for McCain, remember?
These people are on your side, God love em.

Please troll someplace else. I already posted MY opinion. If you are too damned interested in making personal attacks instead of reading it, then please just leave the damn thread.

The ignorance and racism of the man offends me.
But it offends me much more than he was charged with "terrorism".

The charging people for terrorism crap is way out of hand.
Some peacefull protesters were charged with terrorism at the Republican Convention.

If we are going to call it terrorism when some gun totting cajun redneck starts holloring racial slurs, how are we to take real terrorism seriously?

The definition of terrorism is an attempt to threaten or cause violence in order to force others to do what they would not normally do. Yes, this IS terrorism. He threatened the Registrar of voters with a shotgun, for crying out loud.

We can't denounce all racists for the actions of the few.... oh wait.... nevermind...

By your definition, every bank robber and kidnapper would also be a "terrorist".

Hell, every teenage bully would even be a terrorist.

Every rapist would be a terrorist.

Hell, just about every violent crime would be an act of terrorism.

I think a terrorist needs to target civilians AND do it for a semi-political purpose.

Actually this guy is a perfect example of why the Bradley Effect is nonsense. Do you think he'd lie to a pollster that he's voting for Obama, when he so openly admitted his prejudices to the registrar?

Whatever the definition is... some redneck with a shot gun is not a terrorist any more than Americans protesting a convention are.

This is a very dangerous road.
Classifying someone as a terrorist is serious business.
Such a classification should not be thrown around liberally.

I do not want to wind up having a Country where it is an act of terrorism to speak out against the Government.
But it already is if your near a Convention.

That just reminded me of Tropic Thunder.

" What do you mean 'you people'?"
"... What do YOU mean 'you people'?"

-- He threatened the Registrar of voters with a shotgun, for crying out loud.

The article doesn't say he went in brandishing a weapon - only that "Williams reportedly -- also stated that he had a shotgun, but had hidden it at his residence."

So he didn't quite tote a gun around or threaten people, just that he had a shotgun hidden at his house... according to the article.

I think you will always get the odd idiot like this guy. However i kinda think Obama will get votes even from people who are slightly racist. The injection of race in this debate hasnt come from the politicians its come from the media and rev. wright.

Obama himself has played the race card several times.

That just makes it even worse.
So the guy did nothing but run his uneducated mouth?
And for that he gets shipped off to a terrorist camp with zero rights and no trial?
Possibly for life?
Possibly tortured?

Screw that.

The 'Bradley Effect' may have had some legitimacy back in the '80's and 90's, but this is 2008. Yes, there are still racists, but they aren't going to tell pollsters they're going to vote one way and then vote different in the voting booth, they're going tell you straight up they're not voting for a certain candidate. Yes, I believe there will be a very small, almost minute, 'Bradley Effect', but not enough to make any difference.

Wikipedia gave a couple of examples.

In 2006, there was speculation that the Bradley effect might appear in the Tennessee race for United States Senator between Harold Ford, Jr. and white candidate Bob Corker. Ford lost by a slim margin, but an examination of exit polling data indicated that the percentage of white voters who voted for him remained close to the percentage that indicated they would do so in polls conducted prior to the election. Several other 2006 biracial contests saw pre-election polls predict their respective elections' final results with similar accuracy.

In the race for United States Senator from Maryland, black Republican candidate Michael Steele lost by a wider margin than predicted by late polls. However, those polls correctly predicted Steele's numbers, with the discrepancy in his margin of defeat resulting from their underestimating the numbers for his white Democratic opponent. Those same polls also underestimated the Democratic candidate in the state's race for governor — a race in which both candidates were white.

Whoa! Hold up, who said he should shipped off to a terrorist camp for life and torture?

Domestic terrorism doesn't follow those standards and never did. (Nor does international terrorism anymore, see: Rasul v. Bush; Al Odah v. United States)

That being said, if he only mentioned a gun, it's not terrorism. If he isn't actually attacking for ideological reasons, it's not terrorism. But domestic terrorism exists. The KKK is a domestic terrorist group, for example.

Yeah your right. But i do not know precisely what happens to such a person.
Do you?

What about the people at the Palin rallies that chant "kill Obama" and call him a terrorist?

I would bet you ANYTHING that there are millions of Americans going into redneck mode or hyperbole mode and talking mad **** about all 4 candidates.

Just the other day when Palin was speaking across from my jobsite, i got stuck in Palin traffic and the police blocked off my way to WhataBurger.
I was talking some mad **** about Palin in my van.
Things i will not repeat lol.
I would of made that redneck seem like a cute little angel if i had been overheard.
And what if i was overheard? Would that make me a terrorist?
I was just a angry hungry painter who's food was blocked by Palin.

If any American that talks **** or protests is going to be considered a terrorist, then we need a hell of a lot more Prisons.

You and I both know that special treatment is reserved for non US terrorists, I don't think any home-grown US terrorists get that kind of treatment - they face trial and can have legal representation just like any other criminal.

Somehow a distinction has to made between a "terrorist" and this dumbass telling someone on the phone what he is going to do.
Arrested for communicating a threat? Yea, sure......but terrorism? c'mon..
A dangerous road indeed.

This is the problem with anti-terrorist legislation it gets abused and is used for purposes it wasnt intended for.

I'm not sure about the Bradley Effect. What's to prevent it from operating in reverse?

Let's say you have a racist family, but you like Obama. Are you gonna tell your racist family that you're voting for a black man? Are you ever going to admit that your vote went to a black man?

I expect this Bradley Effect can swing both ways.

:comp:

Yeah your right. But i do not know precisely what happens to such a person.

Not a foreign terrorist, no, but home growns get treated like criminals. Timothy McVeigh, Theodore Kaczynski, etc.

No, just speaking out or threatening someone is not grounds for being labeled as a terrorist. A violent attack of some sort against civilian targets in support of those ideologies must be made or attemtped. The KKK has killed and commited violence against civilian targets in favor of their ideology, and that is whay they are a domestic terrorist group.
