Current Mood: | Palin's small town secured big federal funds ST. PAUL, Minn. - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group.
There was $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs, and $15 million for a rail project -- all intended to benefit Palin's town, Wasilla, located about 45 miles north of Anchorage.
<snip>
McCain's crusade against earmarks -- federal spending sought by members of Congress to benefit specific projects -- has been a hallmark of his campaign. He has said earmarks are wasteful and are often inserted into bills with little oversight, sometimes by a single powerful lawmaker. Palin secured earmarks for town - Washington Post - MSNBC.com |

youth shelter, trans hub, and sewer repairs, yeah what small town needs that.
this partisanism of the left has far bypassed anything any of us have done on obama, in 3 days.
Pathetic.

I thought mcCain was supposed to be against earmarks? Why would he choose someone as a running mate that is obviously very pro earmarks? |

Thank you. | Then you should not have a candidate claiming to be against ALL earmarks, before he was only against the "bad" ones. Sorry McCain dug his own hole on this one. |

Thank you. | The republican theory would be that these should be local funds and not federal funds. This is based on the GOP platform (page 22): Washington’s Failure: the Scope of the Problem The federal government collects $2.7 trillion a year from American families and businesses. That’s $7.4 billion a day. Even worse, it spends over $3 trillion a year: $8.2 billion a day. Why? Largely because those who created this bloated government will not admit a single mistake or abolish a single program. Earmarking must stop. To eliminate wasteful projects and pay-offs to special interests, we will impose an immediate moratorium on the earmarking system and reform the appropriations process through full transparency. Tax dollars must be distributed on the basis of clear national priorities, not a politician’s seniority or party position.

Thank you. | As I said, you should not have a candidate rambling on against earmarks when that's how the freaking system works.
I don't care if earmarks are good or bad, but its the hypocrisy of McCain that he in one breath is so opposed to earmarks, and then the next breath says its okay for some things (when people remind him Israel gets 100% funding via earmarks).and over to taking a running mate that not only openly used earmarks to "fatten up" her town, but also openly backed one of the biggest scandal earmarks that McCain himself has rambled on about as being bad! |
