Texas Approves a $4.93 Billion Wind-Power Project

Texas, already the number one state in the nation on wind power, has just approved upgrades in its transmission system, which will result in enough wind energy to power 3.7 million homes, and this is just the beginning. Several wind power projects are also being started by private developers, including T. Boone Pickens, whose own wind farm in the Texas panhandle will produce 4,000 megawatts of power when completed. The new transmission lines will be able to handle 18,500 megawatts of power.

This is a good start, but it is just a start. As T. Boone Pickens himself stated, replacing natural gas for power generation with wind and other resources, and then using that natural gas in the transportation sector, will cut our importation of foreign oil almost in half, and will buy us time enough to build more nuclear plants, and invest in a hydrogen economy, which can eventually come to fruition if our leaders have the will to act. But it IS time for politicians to act, and stop posturning.

To the Republicans - We cannot drill our way out of this crises, so stop lying to the American people, telling us that we can. We need action NOW.

To the Democrats - Drilling will help some, and we need all the help we can get, so stop lying to the American people, telling us that it will do nothing. Something, even if not much, is better than nothing. We need action NOW.

And to both Republicans and Democrats - Shame on both of you for putting your own political interests ahead of America. IMHO, all of you are being just about as unamerican as one can get. If you can't get together, and do what is right for this nation, then I suggest that you all move to another nation, which will appreciate your POLITICAL talents - Communist China.

Its a good start, just a small start, but a good start nonetheless. Are we allowed to be somewhat proud of texas now?

And it is a Red state, showing that the Democrats do NOT have a monopoly in being able to see the usefulness of clean energy. In fact, both presidential candidates support reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Too bad Gore and the greenies won't accept nuclear (at least over the next couple of generations) while we develop cleaner forms of energy on a mass scale.

Do you know who T. Boone Pickens is?

T. Boone Pickens, Jr. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He is a billionaire who made his money from Big oil. You know, the typical kind of person democrats despise and want to tax and punish simply because he "made too much money" and "doesn't care for anyhting except getting richer and richer". Yet, here he is doing more for renewable energy than say, the democrat party. Even more surprisingly, he is doing it in a RED state where suppsoedly, everyone is dumb redneck christians who don't care about the enviroment.

Its goign to be a sad day for democrats when it is a red-state like Texas contributes more to renewable energy than California or New York or MAssechusetts.

Al-Gore and his gas-guzzling Limo and luxury personal airplane has to be PISSED right now.

(T Boon is on a roll, I wonder which state will be his next target.)
Texans reputedly have the biggest mouths, next could well be a State that has the reputation of having braggarts.
It surprises me that the US has so few vehicles running on Propane as this fuel is in use in other countries.
Doncha think?

And this kind of propaganda is exactly why many people are leery about drilling for oil. I have no PROBLEM with drilling for oil persay; I just worry that too many people will think along these lines and use it as an excuse to not take any REAL action.

No, drilling for oil will NOT do anything. Certainly not any significant amount. It might increase the overall world supply a whopping 1%, after the production actually hits full power. What it WILL do is give lots of people an excuse to say "z0MG we have an energy plan! We're drilling for more oil LULZ!"

If states want to drill for oil, go for it. But please stop with the misinformation that it's actually a solution (even a partial solution) to our energy problems.

Re: Texas Approves a $4.93 Billion Wind-Power Project

Concerning Mr. Pickens plan, I wonder if anyone has factored in the cost of converting cars to NG? Freeing up NG to use in cars is fine, but how many citizens can pay for the conversion? Arizona had a tax subsidy for conversions that was very generous, but ended up costing the state hundreds of millions of dollars before they backed off. A politician or 2 went down the tubes over the project. With that fiasco on the books, I doubt that any other state will do the same.
I applaud the windmill projects, especailly in Texas. The visual impact won't be so bad there, because much of it is flat, dull, plain, etc.
But it will be expensive....
