WASHINGTON (AP) - Just as John F. Kennedy set his sights on the moon, Al Gore is challenging the nation to produce every kilowatt of electricity through wind, sun and other Earth-friendly energy sources within 10 years, an audacious goal he hopes the next president will embrace. |
Gore in his usual sensationalistic way is yet again proposing lofty goals and ideals that are impossible to reach.
Now I am for cheap energy. But where would we put these windmills? Off of martha's vineyard? We tried that.... |

Current Mood: | Re: Gore sets 'moon shot' goal on climate change Its not impossible to produce all of our peak power using solar energy. We have more than enough land, and the technology exists today. Granted, you'd probably have to keep natural gas around for non-daylight power in the short term, but eventually you could store energy instead. I think Gore's vision isn't realistic, but it is something to strive for. Although, if a breakthrough technology can be commercialized in that time period, it might actually come true. Not something to rely upon however. Still, its not any worse than most crap politicians promise, and its actually a laudable goal, if not reachable.

10 years really isn't that practical, but the over all idea is a good one. I don't think the U.S. could replace its energy needs with those methods, but it could sure as hell help out. Even if those sources could produce 10% of the needed energy, then the extra supply of fossil fuels would lower prices. The supply of natural energy is never ending.
Too bad big oil would never let this happen. |

So would drilling an increase of %10 percent have the same effect? |

Eventually the oil runs out, and then you're back where you started. Solar power and windmills are also cheaper to install, and you don't need nearly as many staff to monitor power. You basically build them and then they do all the work for you. |

Comes down to it, we stand to gain more from Gore's proposals than we did from the moon shot.....and it beats standing around and waiting for "breakthrough" technology.....
I believe Pickens, as rich as he already is, just wants to grab some of the taxpayer subsidies, but that Gore is at least sincere about making progress without trying to become a billionaire in the process.

You do know gore holds stocks in many of the companies that provide for the solutions he proposes right? |

He is already building a 4,000 Megawatt wind plant in the Texas panhandle. Even before that goes online, Texas is still the number one provider of wind power in the United States, and produces more power from wind than the next 14 states produce together. And what's wrong with Pickens making money? I thought that innovation was the American way. |
