Pelosi stands firm against offshore drilling

Pelosi stands firm against offshore drilling - International Herald Tribune

[quote]
WASHINGTON: Upon entering Congress in 1987, Representative Nancy Pelosi quickly became part of the solid California front against oil drilling along much of the nation's coast.

The 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and the steady push to tap the potential reserves off the state's rugged coast had galvanized Californians and made opposition to offshore drilling part of the political DNA of up-and-coming figures like Pelosi.

She repeatedly resisted oil drilling.....

This elitist "C.ant U.nderstand N.ormal T.hinking" ultra liberal congresscritter just does not get it.

I find her using a 1969 spill to keep california and the country dependent on foreign oil borderline treasonous. Not suprised though.

Does she realize that the oil rig technology has improved immensly?

What modern data can she point to for her idiotic reasonings?

First of all, your conclusion that she is using a 1969 oil spill to stop the drilling is incorrect. I didn't see that in the article at all. She used that rationale in 1996. I don't see her using it now.

You know, I just realized who I am "talking" to, and I'm wasting my time. Keep ranting.....

In 1996 she was referring to the 1969 spill.

""We learned the hard way that oil and water do not mix on our coast," Pelosi told a key committee in 1996 as she made her case for keeping the ban in place before a Congress then controlled by Republicans."

You know personal attacks are against forum rules. Please try to demonstate an ability of self control, This behavior is really unattractive.

It's really simple. George Bush is for it, so in all her liberal Bush Derangement Syndrome insanity she must oppose it, no matter what.

1) The Californians' opposition to drilling off the coast is based on sheer ignorance. Off the coast of California is a subduction zone, where one plate moves beneath another plate, and whatever oil is present in the subsiding plate is released in the form of tar balls. When Californians saw tarballs, and saw oil rigs, they put 2 and 2 together, and their answer came out to be 5. This was the reason for the moratorium on drilling off the shores of California.

2) Drilling would be nice, but it is not that great of a solution. As T. Boone Pickens points out, this is a crisis that we cannot drill our way out of, but Pickens also points out a solution that would cut our dependence on oil by almost half within 10 years. At the present time, 22% of our power generation is by natural gas. By building enough wind and solar power plants, we can replace that 22%, and then divert the natural gas to the transportation sector. While drilling off the coasts would then not be necessary, any oil obtained in that manner would be gravy, which we could use to further reduce our dependency on foreign oil. But drilling is not the cure all that some people are attempting to tout it as. Again, our problem is not one that we can drill our way out of.

I think we could do better than pickins plan with a few nuclear power plants. faster, cheaper, and easier.

Nuclear will take many many years. Pickens' plan, as he states, is a bridge to an era that would include nuclear.
