They didn't
make the law, they
upheld the law according to the wording of the State Constitution. Nowhere did it define marriage as between a man and a woman, but between two people. If they struck down gay marriage, it would have been unconstitutional and illegal. They are now allowing a vote on the issue, which is constitutional, just like their original ruling was constitutional.
It's not difficult to understand. Don't just hit "reply" and start typing. Really stop and think about what that means:
they were upholding the State Constitution. Your real worry should only take place if they failed to do that, because then the foundation of your country would be in serious danger.

That may be the case, but the State Supreme Court, as selectees upholding the Constitution and the rights of people enshrined in law, was doing its constitutional duty. The fact that you are so against it makes me wonder if you even: a) understand the true nature of the original ruling, and b) agree with the upholding of State constitutions which protect people from unlawful government actions.
I can't really speak to other rulings the CA Supreme Court has made in the past, but this issue is proceeding according to fair, due process. It has nothing to do with the judges being activist, or Conservative, or Liberal. They did their job as fair interpreters of the law and for that we should be grateful.
