The statement from North Korea's official news agency marked the third straight day of bellicose rhetoric from the North, which is angry over the harsher line the South's new president has taken against the country since assuming office last month.

If NK attacks we may be forced to defend our ally. With the current political climate, and high level of opposition to conflict in the US it would be tough to sell this war.

Not really, it would be justified because its to protect an ally.

As for the political climate, I agree. Our budget will not allow for a second korean war. I fear we will end up like the post-cold war USSR, bankrupt.

Here is plan, give south korea some nukes.

I would support any defense of our allies, but we shouldn't be provoking a nuclear war. The action of giving them nukes alone would probably be reason enough for NK to initiate the attack.

I doubt that. You need to deduce why NK would want to attack with nukes at all. The reason is because their enemy, SK, doesn't have nukes, and the US is in political turmoil. If you give SK nukes, the problem will be solved. NK will not want to attack for fear of nuclear war.

We shouldn't underestimate Kim Jong-il. The guy is unstable at best.

I say, don't overestimate his stupidity. He maybe a bad leader, but he isn't stupid. You have to admit, The timing in all this is genius... SK doesn't have any nuke, they do, and SK's only ally, the US, is too busy fighting another war and in an virtual political civil-war.

Yes he is, and I wouldn't have a problem wiping him out. I don't believe Americans would get behind anymore "pre-emptive" actions though (at least not right now).

NK is being the same ol NK as it's been for the last 60 years. Nothing new really.
This year is rather simple. Get China to reign in their barking dog or face serious embarrassment from a conflict on the Korean Peninsula and right before the Aug. Olympics.
China won't risk this embarrassment and so will tell Lil Kim to shut the frack up.
There's no war that's going to happen on the Korean Peninsula, not this year anyway.
