While the timing stinks to high heaven (after the Texas primary,) the apology is out (in a sorts.) I knew he wasn't anti-Catholic, but the association with Hagee is disturbing. At least he has publically come out and disavowed the anti-Catholic bigotry of Hagee.
I think McCain handled it well........This is a smear and a non issue....

Assciating with Hagee is a SMEAR!?!? A non-issue?!? It IS an issue to large numbers of Catholics, including myself.
PHOENIX - John McCain is refusing to renounce the endorsement of a prominent Texas televangelist who Democrats say peddles anti-Catholic and other intolerant speech.
Instead, the Republican presidential candidate issued a statement Friday afternoon saying he had unspecified disagreements with the San Antonio megachurch leader, John Hagee. Hagee endorsed him at a news conference Wednesday in San Antonio.
NEW ORLEANS - Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Friday repudiated any views of a prominent televangelist who endorsed him last month "if they are anti-Catholic or offensive to Catholics."
McCain has come under fire since televangelist John Hagee endorsed him on Feb. 27, but until Friday his response had been tepid. The Arizona senator merely said he doesn't agree with everyone who endorses him. He said Friday he had been hearing from Catholics who find Hagee's comments offensive.
How noble of McCain...

I hope....I hope...there isn't a single Catholic in this country who's going to vote for McCain after this. That includes you Navy. How can you possibly support a man who won't instantly distance himself from somebody like Hagee? Specially knowing that Hagee is anti-Catholic. Are you saying your party is more important then your religion?

I am sure there are still Catholics who will vote for him as the alternative is ... well ...
However, I am having a real struggle of conscience right now knowing that he has associated with such a bigot against who I am as a person. My Catholic faith is a very important part of who I am.
Any chance of voting for Obama, then, who at least completely rejected HIS extremist religious supporter?
"We've had a dignified campaign, and I repudiate any comments that are made, including Pastor Hagee's, if they are anti-Catholic or offensive to Catholics," McCain said.
"I sent two of my children to Catholic school. I categorically reject and repudiate any statement that was made that was anti-Catholic, both in intent and nature. I categorically reject it, and I repudiate it," McCain said.
"And we can't have that in this campaign," McCain said. "We're trying to unite the country. We're uniting the country, not dividing it."
That's not enough? :?
It seems overly harsh to get annoyed that he didn't categorically reject the statements fast enough.

It says a lot about his character that he would associate himself with Hagee and his megachurch BEFORE the primaries and then reject them after he'd won. Specially after he's called people like Hagee agents of hate. It's funny how all McCain supporters jumped on Obama about the Farrakhan thing but haven't said a thing about McCain's ****-up.
Fair enough. I'm guessing McCain feels like he has to pander to these idiots to some extent, which is disappointing. Party unity is one thing, but one of his appealing attributes is his ability to recognize and call out agents of intolerance, no matter their partisan alignment.
For the record, I think that the Obama/Farrakhan bull**** is just that - bull****.

I like Obama on a personal level. I would love to have a drink with him or a BBQ, but I think he is a little too liberal and more importantly inexperienced to be President.
I DO applaud him for distancing himself from Ferrakhan and I respect him for it.
Fair enough. I'd disagree with you on some of that, but we have enough threads for that.
So how are you going to vote if it comes down to McCain the anti-catholic panderer and inexperienced liberal obama?
edit:As soon as I posted that, I remember you're in Taiwan. Take it to mean how you'd vote if you were on this side of the Pacific.
