Embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, senior administration officials told CNN Monday.

Many lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have long called for his ouster after the firing of several U.S. attorneys in 2006. President Bush had long stood by Gonzales.

Sounds like Chertoff is getting the nod from Bush to replace Gonzales. I don't get it. If Gonzeles really did nothing wrong and this is all a witch hunt, then why is he resigning?

Edit--Sorry I spelled his name wrong in the thread title.

Its good that he finally realized that he had lost credibility, not only among Democrats, but also Republicans. The American people have indicated that its time to "clean house"...this is a big step in the right direction.

there is no way the Republicans have actually recognized the villianous way he abused his position. They're just firing him as a consolation to the new democratic majority. Republicans will not and cannot recognize their mistakes. They firmly believe that a totally upstanding political officer is being forced out because of conniving democratic partisanship. The first tenet of Neo-Conism is "no retractions, no repentance, no recantance."

They believe that when you're in power you can do anything you want, particularly to preserve that power. They think the Democrats are as corrupt as they are, so they assume that all Democratic action is as single mindedely obsessed with an end by any means. They truly believe that there was nothing wrong with Gonzales purging his office of anyone who wouldn't adopt the Republican line and persecute the Democrats.

Anyone that posts the reason(s) why he resigned is real stupid. You don't know now and when he states his reason(s) for leaving you still won't know.

I'm sure he resigned so he could "spend more time with his family." But you're right, it would be stupid of me to assume it has anything to do with the criminal firing of federal prosecutors.

It would be completely unfounded and totally speculative to state that the prosecutor firings had anything at all to do with this "resignation."

On further thought, taking acount of the deep political and psychological analysis above, I've decided that I dont know why Nixon resigned either.

I mean hey, it may have been because of the impending impeachment because of Watergate, but as the poster above so cleverly opined, we just can't really know can we? Speculative guesses have no gradation, one guess is equal to any other. There just is no way we can ever make any kind of statement about why he left. Ever. To do so would of course be stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Just silly.

He quit because he was being harassed by the liberal media. I mean everybody quits when asked about the particularities of their job in detail. Seriously, if every time my wife's father harassed me about not having a blue collar job I quit my job, I'd be dirt poor today.

He probably decided that the idiocy of the witch hunt was making his job impossible and answering questions from pompous and arrogant democrats and stupid republicans while being smeared in the media was no longer worth the job.

US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President, firing 8, or all of them, is his prerogative, this has been another case of "Throw all the s*** on the wall we can and hope something sticks" from the left in their vain and hopeless desire to bring down Bush.

Who on earth would want the position and have to put up with the partisan witch-hunts the Dems are engaged in?

And for those still engaged in the character assassinations of Gonzales, when you post them post any evidence that supports the accusations of any illegalities you levy against him.

How we will ever get people to want to take these positions after the way the Dems have abused their positions is beyond me.

Was Gonzales the best AD ever, was he even one of the best, probably not, but he was not what the propagandist made him out to be.

This isn't about your father, this was about a power abuse by the Dems. Good people won't serve in these positions and have to put up with the nonsense coming from the Dems and their egregious character assassinations.

FANTASTIC! Good riddance, you low-class, law-breaking jerk!

you're all wrong. we can't know why we quit. we can't even speculate. all of history is meaningless. stop it or the bad man will call you stupid.

I think it's pretty clear, he doesn't have to put up with the nonsense and character attacks the Democrat leadership and leading their party into. He can go get a very good job elsewhere thankyouverymuch.

But if a Dem president gets in I hope all of their appointees and their advisors get the same treatment, subpoena's for all their emails every time they make a decision, if any USAG's are fired then all the emails and private discussions in the Oval Office will be investigated.

And once again if you can't win at the ballot box engage in partisan character assassination, phony witch-hunt investigations and either make them so totally disgusted they leave government service or get them thrown in jail.

Just wait until the is a Dem president, just wait.

YES! Because you can do somthing you should do somthing! Every power the President has can be used without restraint or tactic whenever the President wants! Because that's the way to effectively run a country, without restraint! That is the way mature people handle power!

Horrible Democrats, why don't they understand that it is good and right that the party in power uses the justice system to persecute the party out of power! That's just how the foundered intended it to work!

The problem with Neo-cons is that building a system with totally effective checks and balances is impossible. At some point you have to assume the other guy has some kind of scruples and isn't a completely ideoligcal fanatic. Unfortunately the Republican party has shown that it cannot be held to that standard. If you give it a power, it will abuse it.

So he left because Democrats are mean? So he's an enormous ***** cry baby?

I'm glad Clinton was such a bitch that "character assasination" (which is a great term by the way, potent and full of tangible meaning) could force him to resign.

That's not true. If you are good and honest(something that this administration has had a problem with)....you will have no problem serving. But when you lie to protect a corrupt administration, you will be swept out because the American people deserve a clean house.

I'm sure you support the partisan witch hunts and character assassination the Dems engaged in, you attempts to trivialize it clearly shows that.

I'm glad Clinton..............................

If you really want to try and compare this to Clinton let's do it. You ready? I am.

But what you do prove is that this is all about payback isn't it. The Dems put in a man whose personal behavior with government employees was absolutely deplorable and rather than admit it stood by the creep and now want revenge. What folly.

Apparently Chertoff wants the position, or at least is willing to take it. See the funny thing is if you don't do a crappy job, you don't get criticized for it. Is Condi being investigated by Congress? No. The reason is she's doing a reasonable job.

I personally don't think Gonzales did anything illegal. But what he did was certainly improper. The Justice Department needs to be above the politics of Washington. Forcing the US Attorneys to tow the party line degrades the whole justice system. Illegal? No. Improper? Absolutely.

You'll get your chance.....very soon.

Could be, and surely you won't object to the Rep's demanding all the emails and transcripts of the conversations between that President and his/her advisor's and anytime he/she fires a USAG they must go before congress and explain in detail why and supply any and all emails from anyone who might have said anything about it? And if there is one single discrepancy that person goes to jail.

Your partisanship is abundantly evident Stinger

:rofl mine? How so? Or is this your attempt to deflect it to the personal in order to avoid the issue?

Do you know how boring it is when that is all you can bring to the table?

I would have no problem with that...where there are indications of ethical and/or illegal conduct. See Stinger....I believe that Government should be accountable to the people....Democrats and Republicans...unfortunately this administration has shown us what happens when you have an administration that is not held accountable. Thankfully, they are now.
