"That television station became a threat to the country so I decided not to renew the license because it's my responsibility," Chavez said.

RCTV's top executive, Marcel Granier, said on a morning talk show that Chavez's action "marks a turn toward totalitarianism."

Hundreds of protesters gathered at the station's headquarters to protest the shutdown.

But no, Chavez is a man of the people, who is the best hope for freedom the world has.

Any of you Chavez apologists want to admit that you were wrong yet?

Chavez is further consolidating his hold on power paving the way to become der fuhrer of Venezuela.

C'mon people, he's just trying to stop the fascist tv reporters from actively working to undermine his regime. He's doing this for the good of the nation. Everyone benefits when less people are allowed to stir up dissent, right?

Where are all those that have aligned the Hugo Chavez. Like Danny Glover, where is that sorry *** piece of shiit. Cindy Sheehan isnt out doing damage control for her beloved Hugo.

The new channel, TVES, launched its transmissions with artists singing pro-Chavez music, then carried an exercise program and a talk show, interspersed with government ads proclaiming, "Now Venezuela belongs to everyone." everyone who's name is Hugo Chavez.

I don't think that's fair. Chavez seemed to start out as a pretty standup guy. I don't think anybody could have foreseen what a dickhead he'd turn into.

What are you talking about?

The guy became famous for staging a failed coup.

After getting out of jail, he won his first election using illegal foreign money.

After getting elected, he neglected to pay attention to flood warnings, causing the deaths of 30,000 people (like Katrina, except his fault, preventable, and much bigger.

Immediately after this, he began down his path of violent rhetoric, seizure of public property, socialization of the nation, and suppression of dissent.

The guy has been an absolute piece of **** since day one.

Oh.

All I remember were the headlines and like, the first paragraphs of the articles, where he refused to be enslaved by the big corporations. And I thought, "that's sort of a nice idea, corporations not running the country n' all." I didn't know about all that other stuff.

Taking out corporate welfare is pretty nice thing, but Chavez didn't intend on doing so for the people or to remove some amount of corruption of the government. All his actions have been towards tyranny, to cement his and the state's control over everything; thus enslaving his people. While we haven't gone so far as of yet, it's an important lesson to take in. This is the course of government, this is why small controlled government is a necessity. Allowing government to act in the ways it thinks is proper leads down roads such as this.

Hmmmm...RCTV, wasnt this the TV station that supported the coup? Dont see why it should have a license in that case. Cant imagine NBC or even Fox News retaining theirs after supporting a failed coup can you?

You are thinking in a European manner. It doesn't matter what station supports what in the US. A station will never be shut down for spouting radical nonesense. Look at Err Amerika for instance. They are circling the drain on their own.

Are you telling me you support Hugo Chavez, He is a ruthless freakin dictator. If you don't believe me go to The Human Rights Watch web site or Amnesty International. This guy is a thug. RCTC was the most popular channel in Venezuela.

Somehow I am not suprised you are supporting this action. ~ Sgt Rock

The government accuses the network of participating in the 2002 failed coup d'état that briefly overthrew Hugo Chávez from his position. RCTV argues that no trial has been made that links the network to the coup attempt.[10] The lack of apropiate and timely evidence from the government makes most international human rights experts believe that the reasons for the shutdown are more political than legal.
According to poller Datanálisis, in April 2007, only 13% of Venezuelans agree to deny the license to RCTV, while 70% reject the government's decision.

Ah here it is!

On the afternoon of April 11, 2002, RCTV interrupted a speech made by Chávez to broadcast a shooting that was taking place at an opposition march. Over the next couple of days, the private networks supported Pedro Carmona's interim government, which dissolved the National Assembly and suspended the Constitution. As the coup began to collapse due to popular pressure to restore the democratically elected president to power, RCTV conducted a news blackout.

Awww. Sloppy you. You forgot something in your quote. In bold below.

RCTV has been criticized by Hugo Chávez's government and supporters for its role in the attempted coup of April 11, 2002 and the December 2, 2002 to February 4, 2003 general strike (during which free advertisements for the opposition were broadcast by privately owned TV stations including RCTV). As the coup began to collapse due to popular pressure to restore the democratically elected president to power, RCTV conducted a news blackout because more than 80 RCTV workers were locked in the building while hundreds of armed Chavez followers vandalized the area for more than 8 hours.

What a schmuck :rofl

Some facts it can be imported to consider.

Chavez still have a big popular support and have won numerues election.

The opposition against him havn't been playing fair from the start. Have tried many way to undermine his powers in a non constitunial and non democratic way and even launced a military coup against him and arrested him. And after the coup they both withdraw the constitution and closed down parlament.

Then the private media that almost entirely owned by rich anti chavez people have been totally anti chavez and put out rumours as truth and also false news. And the station that is know closed clearly supported the coup and also gratuled the coup makers after the coup. So if you only look from this perspective the closing of the station is ok. Because I think no goverment would allow newsstation that supported coup against ecpecially if the coup became true. Because it's a big diffrence between calling the goverment idiots and promoting undemocratic overthrowing of them.

Umm he started out by trying to overthrow a democratically elected government through a military coup de'ta, if that's not a sign of things to come then I don't know what is.

lmfao kettle meet pot, Chavez himself attempted a coup de'ta in the late 90's, live by the sword die by sword. Bottom line free speech is dead in Venezuela and while socialists; such as, yourself may find that acceptable we in the freedom loving community do not. As for the constitution and the opposition, Chavez basically wrote the constitution it's a ****ing sham.

As we speek peaceful protestors are being attacked by the Chavez gustapo:

TV protesters routed by cops in Venezuela
CARACAS, Venezuela -- Police broke up an opposition protest using a water cannon and tear gas after thousands took to the streets on Sunday condemning a decision by President Hugo Chavez to force Venezuela's most widely watched channel off the air. Soaked protesters scattered while the stream of water swept the street.

Hot spots :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: World

Free speech is dead in Chavez's Venezuela.

Hay Mein Fuhrer that is not the reason Chavez has given for killing freedom of speech in Venezuela he closed the station and I quote because its steamy soap operas are "a danger for the country, for boys, for girls".

Well Zieg Heil!

70-80% of Venezuelans are against the closure of this station, finally the Venezuelan people have awaken from their sleep and seen this man for the tyrant that he is.

Hmmm...that part in bold you mention is not given in the link you yourself provided. Everyone if you dont believe me just click on the link Shayah provided..

It seems you only get the part in bold if you go separately into Wikipedia and type RCTV!

Hmmm...At this point I cant verify or not this stuff about the blackout being caused by Chavez supporters at the doors, although its strange how people at your doors would shut down broadcasting just at the time that the coup was being overturned. However, this RCTV is a funny old station;

1/ RCTV was the first to broadcast the false claim that Chávez’s supporters were shooting at opposition demonstrators, which then served as a justification for high level military generals to declare their disobedience to the government

2/ During the short-lived insurrection, coup leaders took to commercial TV airwaves to thank the networks. "I must thank Venevisión and RCTV," one grateful leader remarked in an appearance captured in the Irish film The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. The film documents the networks’ participation in the short-lived coup, in which stations put themselves to service as bulletin boards for the coup—hosting coup leaders, silencing government voices and rallying the opposition to a march on the Presidential Palace that was part of the coup plotters strategy.

One of the coup leaders Vice-Admiral Victor Ramirez Perez, underlined the key role of the media in organising the coup, stating, “We had a deadly weapon – the media.”

So is Bush a tyrant? Because most people disagree on the way he conducts the Iraq war? Because that is also an important issue right?
