Schlafly cranks up agitation at Bates

Phyllis Schlafly thinks men own their wives:

Married women can’t be raped by their husbands.

“By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don’t think you can call it rape,” said right-wing activist Phyllis Schlafly yesterday at Bates College. She also noted that women have an “inherent physical inferiority” and should not be firefighters, soldiers, or construction workers: “Women in combat are a hazard to other people around them.”

Where, exactly, is the breaking news?

You're right. It isn't news that Phyllis Schlafly is a crazed radical extremist.

Re: Married women can’t be raped by their husbands.

Dear god I can't believe there are still people in this country that really believe the crap she spews.

Understood. But this isn't news. There are forums for such threads.

Honestly, this woman sounds like she is using the classic Ann Coulter tactic, which is saying outrageous things in order to gain press, exposure and sales (for whatever). Usually people who harbor such extremist beliefs (on either side of the political fence) don't feel the need to constantly express them in such a grandstanding and grandiose way.

How is this not news, but what some bloggers said about Tony Snow is?

If a poster used a blog to report what is happeneing to Tony Snow, it wouldn't be proper either. But the Tony Snow thread is linked to a current news article, making it within the rules.

Phyllis Schlafly is a leader of the religious right who believe their ideological views should be the law of the land. That's why it's breaking news when she makes these insane statements.

This message board has moderators for a reason. I'm sure if they consider it to be outside the rules they will move it or delete it. That still doesn't make this topic irrelevant.

But then they don't get the attention they deserve. ;)

Agreed, but the moderators are very clear on this point.

I totally agree. I used to be a "Breaking News" police woman--remember?

Re: Married women can’t be raped by their husbands.

I can see why democrats and Liberals would love to see the Tony Snow article out of sight...They would not have to defend the outrageous comments by their liberal brothers....

That said the woman in question is a kook and does not represent the views of most Conservatives.....

Her statement about rape is outrageous.....

Come on, Navy Pride. Cut it out. Both sides have scumbags who say the most outrageous things. Let's not pretend that one party has the higher moral authority on this kind of stuff.

The difference is aps I condemn the ones on our side.........I started the thread about Tony Snow and very few Liberals condemned the outrageous comments made by the liberal bloggers about Tony Snow...........that is the sad thing........

I am assuming they didn't condemn them because statements like that should be completely ignored. They were made anonymously, so it's hard to give them any importance. If someone said them on camera, that would be a whole different story. What would you do if you found out that people on the right had put in those comments to make those of us on the left look bad? You just don't know.

They still should be condemned...What if a Conservative said He hope Mrs Edwards died...........It would be all over the news and I would be the first to condemn it.................

Its just that difference between the right and the left......

Off topic aps.....I am getting some respect for Senator Webb.......I heard Chris Matthews say on Hardball yesterday that Webb has refused to shake hands with John Kerry for 20 years becasue of his comments and actions about Vietnam in 1971........

Wrong thread, but you give me a perfect seque-way into this. Someone who would actually say something like this has serious issues, they're obviously someone who is completely ruled by emotion and has zero control over those emotions...

People like this, IMO, should either be pitied or have fingers pointed at them and be laughed at...

Now, on THIS topic, I don't have a fiber in my body that would make me want to force my wife to have sex... it's better if she's a willing partner... and anyone who does? Well, should be taken outside by his wife's brother, father, uncle and shown the meaning of respect...

Did you have any intention of contributing anything to the discussion or did you just want to trollingly criticize the OP?

We have moderators who decide where threads go. Until you become one of them, crawl back under your bridge and wait for a gruff billy goat or something.

That was my exact point about this woman. Very well put.

You did so but with the preemptive "it wasn't as bad as what the libs said about Snow". I am still holding to my position that neither side has a monopoly on distasteful rhetoric and poor taste.
