Well if you can't beat em, join em, is that what I'm hearing? I can't believe it, amazing!

Logically, it only follows that the Republicans will next be asking Osama bin-Laden to lead the Taliban Party wing of the new Afghan gov't and all is forgiven.

QALAT, Afghanistan - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday that the Afghan war against Taliban guerrillas can never be won militarily and urged support for efforts to bring "people who call themselves Taliban" and their allies into the government.

The Tennessee Republican said he learned from briefings that Taliban fighters were too numerous and had too much popular support to be defeated on the battlefield.

"You need to bring them into a more transparent type of government," Frist said during a brief visit to a U.S. and Romanian military base in the southern Taliban stronghold of Qalat. "And if that's accomplished, we'll be successful."

Afghanistan is suffering its heaviest insurgent attacks since a U.S.-led military force toppled the Taliban in late 2001 for harboring al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

According to an Associated Press count, based on reports from U.S., NATO and Afghan officials, at least 2,800 people have been killed nationwide so far this year. The count, which includes militants and civilians, is about 1,300 more than the toll for all of 2005.

The top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry, told Pentagon reporters last month that while the Taliban enemy in Afghanistan is not extremely strong, their numbers and influence have grown in some southern sections of the country.

President Bush has been criticized for his handling of the war and is trying to contain...

:rofl

Well, of course Frist is right, policy-wise. But I am amazed at his political ineptness with one month before elections. I doubt that bringing the Taliban into the government will be too popular with American voters.

GOP meltdown FTW!

FRIST COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR STATEMENT

“While touring Afghanistan, Senator Frist made the observation that Afghan tribesman should be brought into the government or risk losing them to the Taliban. Giving the native tribes often targeted by Taliban recruitment a voice in the government will promote peace and prosperity in the region. Senator Frist does not believe Taliban fighters – often foreign fighters who come to Afghanistan to further conflict – should be brought into the reconciliation process.

Is he backpedaling now or did the media screw up his message in the first place?

Arent you supposed to post a link when you quote anyway?

Mods?

Not really. Bush did say he wanted Osama, as well as the Taliban leaders, "dead or alive". By making politicians out of them, he has achieved his goal. Anybody who becomes a politician might as well be dead.

Watch what you say. There are some on this board who will call you a Liberal for a remark like that.

Speaking of sex offenders, they DID let one head a department for exploited children. :)

I would think it would be a liberal thing to suggest we let the Taliban in the Afghan government.

You have a good point. I have been saying for years that the Bush administration is not in the least bit Conservative.

Most people believe that the Media accurately report what people say.

In reality most news outlets report stories that are a bit like chinese whispers.

There is sometimes some element of truth, but not precisely what those who have been reported as saying, did in fact say.

Remember the inclusion of a punctuation mark can alter the entire sense of someones speech.

However, if this report is accurate, then it seems to me that Mr. Frist may well be talking sensibly, at least this time.

If going to war solved problems, why did God give us the power of speech?

Jaw jaw is way way better than War war!
