This week, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley signed a bill to require the state's public universities to give undocumented aliens -- generally illegal -- in-state tuition privileges.

The bill, known as the Dream Act, is already the law in ten other states, including California, New York, Texas and Illinois.

The only thing to say about this, is it just nuts and every american citizen should be pissed off about it.

If they're paying the tuition and not receiving government-funded grants or scholarships then I really don't care.

But critics argue that the bill will give illegal aliens better treatment than Americans and legal immigrants -- thanks to existing diversity policies at universities.

University of Maryland (College Park) computer science Prof. James Purtilo told FoxNews.com that, during his time as an associate dean, he frequently saw admission officers favor students because of their “undocumented” status.

"They favor students with special circumstances. 'Undocumented alien' would be one of these special circumstances... They help fill out the diversity picture for the admissions office."

How is that fair to american kids whether their recieving grants or not

Maybe not, but I find it ridiculous that I, a united states citizen, have to pay out-of-state tuition rates, while someone who is not a US citizen gets to pay in-state.

I took it to mean that if you live in the state then you get in-state rates. If they're giving a kid in California an in-state rate in Oregon I'd have an issue.

There isn't a shortage of available places in colleges right now. If you want to go odds are you'll find a school to take you if you didn't fail out of high school.

Yes, but that means a non-citizen is receiving special privileges that US citizens are not eligible for.

what do you mean? I live in Texas, so I get in-state tuition in Texas. If I go to school in Oklahoma I get out-of-state rates. Are immigrants being offered in-state rates in states they don't live in??

Smart move by Maryland. These undocumented students are gonna go to college somewhere in the United States. Or maybe somewhere in Europe, Canada, or wherever they wanna go. All Maryland did was insure that the college money from some of those kids was gonna float their way.

I come from Maryland, and I feel sad that my home state would do something like this. For every illegal student that goes to college there is one less seat for a legal student to be accepted and attend college. So these undocumented non-citizens will receive in state tuition benefits? I've lived away from Maryland for some time, but I was born there. The fact that I haven't been a resident for a while would prevent me from getting in state tuition discounts.

So, an illegal with no documentation can get in-state tuition, but a legal US citizen who is a Maryland native cannot... This is messed up.

The problem is that many of those so-called "legal students" don't want to go for whatever reason. Rest assured that there are more than enough seats for legal AND undocumented students. In addition, US citizens have the option of moving to a state and getting in-state tuition after a period of time, like I did. Undocumented students do not have this option. As a result, many of them might have chosen a university out of country to attend, or opted not to go at all. This way, they get to attend college, and pay tuition. Win/win.

It differs by state. In TN you cannot get any in-state discounts unless you have been a documented resident for two years prior to attending school.

Undocumented student's should have any options. They are here illegally and should be prosecuted, not educated. They shouldn't have the freedom of choosing a US university. I know some international students that attend my university and they have to apply for student visas to stay in America legally and study in one of our schools. Allowing illegals in-state benefits and not requiring a visa of someone who is already breaking immigration law is a slap to the face for our legal international students who applied and paid fees to obtain a student visa. It's not right.

You cant vote Democrat and still claim to be American in this country........

.....its one Anti-American/Pro-Infestation bill after another.

I am opposed to illegal immigration and I feel like the adults who come here illegally should be documented, have their fingerprints and DNA recorded, and sent back home. I do not, however, feel as though the child who was brought with that adult can be punished for the actions of their parent. If I take my child with me when I rob a gas station are we going to through my child in jail with me?

Yes you can... Democrats are just as American as Republicans.

North Carolina was the same way. I simply moved there and two years later paid the in-state price.

Actually, what's not right is denying them the opportunity to go to college just because some folks are bent out of shape about their immigration status. Undocumented students should be allowed to pay for and attend university. If you don't want them to go, then maybe you should focus on encouraging US citizens to attend to take up the remaining classroom spaces, because far too few of them do in our country. As a result, there are plenty of empty seats to fill, and one way to do that is by offering undocumented students the opportunity to attend. This way, Maryland's university system makes money, and kids get to go to college. That's a win/win situation.

What this all boils down to is an immigration issue, and trust me, where I live, people hearing legislation with the word 'immigrant' in it are going to assume they are being targetted and vote it down. Or vote in someone who will. If folks are really upset at undocumented students filling up those empty classroom seats, then the solution is to either offer them citizenship, or encourage our own citizens to fill them up.

On a personal level, I really couldn't care less.

As a Marylander my whole life and a student at the biggest state university, I say good job to the folks in Annapolis. This is a good piece of legislation.

Not if law breakers are allowed to go to school.

........being an American doesnt entaill giving this country away as quickly as possible to the criminal infestation coming across the southern border.....thats strictly being a Democrat.

Republicans are just as guilty as the democrats are when it comes to selling out this country to illegals.

As more and more states start to follow Oklahoma and Arizona's lead all the illegals will flee to these sanctuary states. I wonder how many illegals these sanctuary states can tolerate.

Im not sure how this applies to illegal immigrants that have broken our laws getting special treatment
