My grade school teachers were amazed at my neat cursive handwriting, considering guys generally have atrocious penmanship compared to girls. Of course they also thought it was girly...
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

I really want to tax them, but alas, I think what we need to do is get ourselves a Surgeon General to start exercises in all public places. ie, schools, senior centers, government offices, etc. This nation is unhealthy.

    It's like taxing pollution.
There are externalities associated with obesity, these people typically cost us more.

Should throw huge taxes on the food that makes people fat instead.

Heh. I failed cursive in 2nd grade because I was left-handed.

had no idea how to change it. came in next to last in the mile run at the end of junior high. the fellow i beat is now dead due to diabetes (R.I.P. Ono) and was then the size of a sumo wrestler
but had a coach, former Japanese MVP, who wore my ass out in baseball that season. as a now trim freshman, started for the varsity baseball team and have been playing or officiating since. when looking in a mirror (a very rare occurance these days), i still see that fat kid
the truth is, i did it to myself. wore out the carpet in front of the tv from lying down drinking soda and eating donuts
we need to teach our kids that it is MUCH easier to stay in shape than to get into shape

but from that prior cite, after WWII, the older generation thought kids were getting softer. we were. our society is always becoming more sedentary. then JFK had the presidential fitness award. hope Michelle will do something similar. the point is, since we quit being an agrarian society, this concern about the fitness of our youth is a recurring one
but we have more fitness centers, park & rec centers and Y's than ever before ... and at the same time have more fat citizens than ever before (based only on speculation/observation)
i compare it to our education system. we have just as many bright students who work hard and achieve at the highest levels as we have ever seen. but in my school era (50s-60s) the number of stupid, underperforming students was about that same 5% as the high achievers. the 90% in the middle were all average. today that number of stupid, unmotivated low achievers is probably equal to the number of average students. and - i am guessing again - the number of unmotivated fat students today likely follows that same trend
    we are failing our youth
they have to be taught to be healthy, so that they will be healthy adults
they have to be taught that an education is critical to later success as an adult
clearly, we are not teaching them these fundamental - but ultra important - life lessons

nailed it. that and a doting Mom, who came up thru the depression and wanted me to have all the sweet things she missed out on. but no one had a more supportive Mom when i finally saw the light and became an athlete
she had an 8th grade education and didn't know what we find to be commonplace information today. in her hometown they still live to eat instead of eat to live
When we were kids its true we were more sedantary than our parents..but still moved far more than these kids...hell I never sat around...back then Technology was called automation and it made jobs less labor intensive and lost alot of jobs because of it also

That was my problem. I write left-handed and I couldn't do the slant they wanted with the paper angle like a right hander would angle it.

It's amazing what you can actually eat when you're healthy and active - when you're these two things (especially active) your metabolism increases and you can consume higher calorie servings without 'gaining' weight.
