I would say poor families would probably be hit the hardest by this proposal.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Probably. I lived on TV dinners and canned goods when I lived with my mom. I don't think I had a veggie that hadn't been soaked in sodium and stored in a can from the age of 7 right up to 14. We couldn't rightly afford to go out and buy salad fixin's.

here's an excerpt from JFK's program on physical fitness for our youth:
After World War II, many Americans worried that U.S. citizens, especially the young, were growing overweight and out of shape. The nation's economy had changed dramatically, and with it the nature of work and recreation changed. Mechanization had taken many farmers out of the fields and much of the physical labor out of farm work. Fewer factory jobs demanded heavy labor. Television required watching rather than doing. Americans were beginning to confront a new image of themselves and their country, and they did not always like what they saw. ...

no need expending the effort (and calories) walking to walmart to view the scene. just open this link

I think technology is awesome. I love being able to type up a paper instead of hand-writing it. But I'm not going to have my kids playing video games at age 3, or owning a 3DS at age 5, or learning how to do their ABCs or count to ten through a cell phone or computer app. As supplmental resources, technology is great, but right now, we still learn better through hands-on application (i.e. using fingers to count to ten, etc).
Tess there is actually talk of stopping the teaching of cursive writing in schools...Can you even imagine that

"heavyset" reminds me of my Mom's term excusing it as "chubby" ... thank goodness my Dad always countered with "no, he's FAT"
had no idea how to change it. came in next to last in the mile run at the end of junior high. the fellow i beat is now dead due to diabetes (R.I.P. Ono) and was then the size of a sumo wrestler
but had a coach, former Japanese MVP, who wore my ass out in baseball that season. as a now trim freshman, started for the varsity baseball team and have been playing or officiating since. when looking in a mirror (a very rare occurance these days), i still see that fat kid
the truth is, i did it to myself. wore out the carpet in front of the tv from lying down drinking soda and eating donuts
we need to teach our kids that it is MUCH easier to stay in shape than to get into shape
There were fat kids but far less and there wasnt an epidemic
but from that prior cite, after WWII, the older generation thought kids were getting softer. we were. our society is always becoming more sedentary. then JFK had the presidential fitness award. hope Michelle will do something similar. the point is, since we quit being an agrarian society, this concern about the fitness of our youth is a recurring one
but we have more fitness centers, park & rec centers and Y's than ever before ... and at the same time have more fat citizens than ever before (based only on speculation/observation)
i compare it to our education system. we have just as many bright students who work hard and achieve at the highest levels as we have ever seen. but in my school era (50s-60s) the number of stupid, underperforming students was about that same 5% as the high achievers. the 90% in the middle were all average. today that number of stupid, unmotivated low achievers is probably equal to the number of average students. and - i am guessing again - the number of unmotivated fat students today likely follows that same trend
    we are failing our youth
they have to be taught to be healthy, so that they will be healthy adults
they have to be taught that an education is critical to later success as an adult
clearly, we are not teaching them these fundamental - but ultra important - life lessons

... and I bet you were fat cuz you didnt move it
nailed it. that and a doting Mom, who came up thru the depression and wanted me to have all the sweet things she missed out on. but no one had a more supportive Mom when i finally saw the light and became an athlete
she had an 8th grade education and didn't know what we find to be commonplace information today. in her hometown they still live to eat instead of eat to live

They're 16 years too late, damn it!! I failed cursive in 3rd grade 'cause I couldn't slant the letters correctly against the angle of the paper that my teacher requried.

My cursive is atrocious. I do have excellent print, though.
