Palin joins those balking at White House invite to rapper Common - Yahoo! News

The Daily Caller set off the outrage with an article Monday about Common's scheduled appearance Wednesday at an "Evening of Poetry."

"Oh lovely, White House," the former Alaska governor tweeted with a link to Daily Caller's write-up. That story contrasted Common's widely circulated spoken word piece criticizing police, "Letter to the Law," to a poem written by 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson.

At issue are controversial and violent lyrics such as a reference to former president George W. Bush in "Letter to the Law:"

Burn a Bush cuz for peace he no push no but-ton. Killing over oil and grease, no weapons of destruc-tion.

Common, who performed the piece on Def Poetry Jam, also references being armed with an Uzi in battles with police.

I always find it interesting that the 'real'-America Palin represents.... you know... white middle class right wing protestant America... has absolutely no problem with people like Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Eazy-E, Kid Rock, Britney Spears, Jhonny Ramone etc being used by the GOP in some form or manner. However, the minute the White House invites what is considered to be one of the most socially conscious rappers in the industry to an event, then it's subject for criticism. It's because of things like this that it's good to be a leftist. You don't get bogged down in bull**** culture wars.

i disagree. I think maybe the left says less, but I don't think they do less to affect culture, both positively and negatively. Popular culture aside, that is.

You can disagree all you want. The left simply does not get bogged down in culture wars. The right sees it everywhere. Somebody says 'Happy Holidays' to me during Christmas time, I don't care. I understand what they mean. Somebody decides they want to put Christ in a bucket of piss? I don't care, I find it silly but I don't care. Somebody burns a Che Guevara shirt? I could care less. When was the last time you heard of a demonstration because somebody said Atheism was bull****? Never. "Culture Wars" are a thing of the right.

In order to have war you have to have two sides fighting. Not everything is right in front of our faces. I would say on issues of immigration and especially on entitlements the left is just as guilty as anybody in taking actions and contriving scenarios to promote an agenda that isn't in anybody's best interest (except the candidate).

Can you show us how those are culture wars? Better yet, show us what part of your culture is related to Mexicans and welfare? As I said, the right wing sees a culture war where there is none. You fight cause you don't want Mexicans here in large numbers be they legally or illegally and consider them a threat to American culture. You fight in order to restrict people whether they are right wing or left wing from receiving a hand and perceive that as a threat to American culture. Whereas everyone else sees a political issue, the American right wing sees a culture war.

Does anyone really care what Palin says? The woman has become more of a joke/caricature...she's fighting to stay relevant.

No...I don't want people here illegally. I don't care how many legal immigrants we have, or where they're from, as long as they live legally and without animosity towards other citizens.

Also, I feel like entitlements prevent the recipients from advancing. I believe we are doing them a disservice by continuing to hand them a paltry allowance every month without encouraging their skill or educational development. I believe we are doing absolutely nothing to advance the next generation coming from entitlement families.

The culture war exists in the fundamental difference of ideology. You're okay with handing them money, because you think it helps them. I think you're holding them down and they're too damn blind to realize it.

Common is one of the best rappers out there right now in my opinion. Yeah, rappers and most musical artists do tend to say some real **** from time to time.

Again, none of that is actually related to culture. What part of welfare and immigration relate to culture? You're proving my point. Seeing a culture war where there is none.

See thats where you go wrong hatuey. It is christmas and it is channukah and it is Kwanzaa and it is whatever and the people that celebrate it should be allowed to say it...its a LIBERAL thing to restrict christmas not a GOP thing, if were not going to be able to say christmas then they are all out...which is absolutely absurd.
Putting the image of christ in a bucket of piss is offensive to those who believe in him...again thats a liberal thing ...gop does NOT do that...we have to put it where it belongs

Serious...the "war on Christmas" again?....oh please....Liberals are not trying to restrict "christmas"....the only thing that liberals have fought against is the radicial right wing's attempts to force Christmas on everyone. You have ALWAYS and will ALWAYS be able to wish anyone you want Merry Friggin Christmas....you just won't be able to force others who do not wish to....to participate. Is it really that difficult?

Yeah, rappers and most musical artists do tend to say some real **** from time to time.

Sure they do....but rarely about politics, however. Society, sure, but it is usually limited. Once it comes to "we should do this" then I can roll my eyes, because what follows is usually naive. To me, it is like getting one's philosophical advice from a comedian. Wait, that's not a good example either, because people do that too.

While I can appreciate the irony, I too would not support supposed battles with police using an "uzi". That seems like a legitimate criticism. Though, I suppose I am too much of a fascist, because I happen to like propping up our authority figures...like the somewhat cheesy, but useful "Yes We Can" song.

You're kidding right? Both of those issues are very much a part of the cultural make up of this country. Culture is religion and music genre alone.

The War on Christmas is a joke that was created by the right.

Alright guys i'm gonna jump in here, even if the atmosphere is kind of toxic.

Hatuey - I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think your characterizations are entirely accurate. The "Culture War" is a term that was coined to describe the differences in opinion between social liberals and social conservatives. Culture in this sense refers not just to art, music, dance, architecture, etc. Culture refers to social and societal attitudes possessed by two groups with drastically different visions. In that sense the "culture war" is very real. Both sides, not just conservatives, have often supported social legislation that infringes on the civil liberties of others. I do think some liberals, especially the ACLU-types, often take the "separation of church and state" thing a bit too far. Of course, the "culture war" issue that I feel most strongly about is gay rights and gays/women serving in the military. Those are situations in which I feel conservatives are REALLY trippin'

You need to listen to some Public Enemy.

Exactly what I thought when I read his comment.

Good lord, if the president and his wife want to have satanic death metal bands to the white house to play, more power to them. It's ****ing music, and this whole controversy is painfully stupid.

Im not an obama fan by any means...but who he wants to invite to the whitehouse is on him...Im sure theres been other presidents who have invited people that others found less than desirable...theres so much to go after obama for...eh not this in my opinion

Your post is possibly the most ludicrous posts I have ever seen from a Libertarian since for ever.

This is a joke right, "considered to be one of the most socially conscious rappers," why because he can read up to 3rd grade level?

Your hero degrades woman uses the F-BOMB in front of women and children and called for the Murder of President Bush, a few years ago.

Obama is the fool in this case for inviting a scum bag to the White House.

I'll be damned if I would go across the street to see some so call artist do bad poetry to a beat since most of the subjects covered are illegal acts or about degradation.

BTW, posted this in other thread but it needs to be posted here too. Those upset about Common? Were you all upset when Ronald Regan invited Eazy E to the White House?? Afterall he was a real headleader of Gangster Rap and was with NWA. Did that bother you all too? :)

Or is this one of those cases of it is fine for a repub to do but damn if the dems invite a talented wordsmith to the white house:roll:
