The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.

The plan is a part of the administration's Transportation Opportunities Act, an undated draft of which was obtained this week by Transportation Weekly.

The White House, however, said the bill is only an early draft that was not formally circulated within the administration.

“This is not an administration proposal," White House spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said. "This is not a bill supported by the administration. This was an early working draft proposal that was never formally circulated within the administration, does not taken into account the advice of the president’s senior advisers, economic team or Cabinet officials, and does not represent the views of the president.”

My car does not get good mileage. I would support replacing the gas tax with a mileage tax

I found this quote from the article interesting:

"Among other things, CBO suggested that a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place electronically at filling stations."

This doesn't really have anything to do with revenues because vehicles are already taxed by mileage; the more you drive, the more gallons of fuel you need to buy, the more taxes you pay. Taxes are already paid at the pump, it's not like you can buy gas and choose not to pay the tax.

Maybe the feds think that the business owners and states are not forwarding all of the tax monies? Or, this isn't a replacement tax but an additional tax? Whatever the reason, I don't want any electronic tracking devices in my car unless I put them there.
 
It doesn't really matter that the Administration claims that it does not support this, this proposal has been floating around for years and it will be attempted sooner or later. In fact, the article mentions that people will need a couple of years to get used to the idea, so of course a President with high negatives is going to claim that he's not for this right now.

The absense of fact always matters. It matters in this case because this article was posted in the breaking news section. Since this is not the position of the Administration, it is hardly breaking news.
 
That tax will never pass in my opinion, that would be one issue that would fire the entire country up fast, from business to individuals from rich to poor. Could you even imagine how high that would push prices for everything.

BTW, this taxing cars by miles will NEVER happen in our lifetimes. It is crap and not gonna happen.
 
My friends Liberals, Moderates and Conservatives, if we all put our foot down we can insure this never comes to reality.

We are paying too much for everthing now.

If Obama gets his way on this imagine what the cost will do to the overall economy.

Obama has helped cause the price of gas to SKYROCKET as he had promised, we don't need any more Obama BS. :thumbdown

Here's a fact for you, the Obama administration is only a little over halfway through it's first term and they've already floated this idea twice. That's an odd action for a man who doesn't support this idea.

Excuse me, but what was the price of OIL per barrel when our OILY president GWmaximummushforbrains came into the oval orifice. Was it $12 or $16 per barrel. The OIL man, sponsored by OILY interests, increasing OIL prices. Gee, did anybody notice?
 
I heard a similar thing years ago, long before Obama. The idea of putting electronic devices on cars to tax usage was laughable then and is now.
Besides, as has been noted, usage rated tax already exists in the federal and state taxes.
