The new plan, revealed in a planning document reviewed by POLITICO and in the subsequent interview with Henry, reflects the widening recognition by labor leaders that the shrinking national ranks of union members no longer carry the political heft they once did. The draft plan, titled “Fight for a Fair Economy” in what Henry said was a preliminary planning document, would reach outside union ranks to focus on “mobilizing underpaid, underemployed and unemployed workers” and “channeling anger about jobs into action for positive change.”

I was talking to my dad (who is an IBEW member) this morning about this crap. My dad's words exactly

"The whinny bastards need to shut the **** up and get back to work"

Weird how your dad will reap the benefits of unionization while criticizing other people for trying to do the same.

Hypocrisy is as old as mankind.

Great article. Great union strategy. Its about time and well overdue. Walker and his anti-union far right zealots have awakened a sleeping giant. Now they have to contend with it.

Weird how people like Deuce want to claim everyone benefits from unions. It is possible that this gentleman is working in a closed shop and it's join the union or not work. You know, freedom, organized-crime style.

There is a difference between protesting against a scumbag employer who deliberately breaks signed contracts (for example not paying wages on agreed timeframe) and protesting for the sake of protesting. There has been a long silent hatred between private sector unions (which is what my father is) and public sector. Private sector unions take their medicine when it time to take it while public sector whine like spoiled brats.

OH NO! Changing things for the better? Whatever will we do?

Union workers are the only labor in this country that make a fair wage and have decent working conditions for the most part...non union shops are PAID FAR LESS get NO benefits no pensions get to work longer hours and guess WHO profits and pockets from the fruits of their labor.
The ones that whine about unions benefit without them

Not true but when you consider the normal conduct of union goons and thugs, lying is a minor infraction. I wonder when Mr. Trumka will realize he has a bunk buddy in the White House but not many outside in the world?

I never joined a union and my pay and benefits were fine. In fact, and it is a fact, our pay and benefits deteriorated when the corrupt, brutal, and incompetent brought in a union to protect them. I will agree. They need a union. People who aren't corrupt, aren't brutal, and arent' incompetent, don't.

Your probably right, taking the unions off the nipple of the state will in deed be difficult. The leftist and unions will win this fight eventually, and later on these individuals will find themselves in the unemployment line living in a state that is insolvent. So it is greed that motivates these people and as a result this generation will screw the next.

Did you have a labor job

Did you have a labor job

Patrick just because you dislike unions does not make every union worker incompetent or lazy it makes you narrow minded and spiteful

Weird how your dad will reap the benefits of unionization while criticizing other people for trying to do the same.

Exactly Duece. Dad appears to be most ungrateful. Or uninformed.

I hope that giant is awakened. I hope you're right.

Did you have a labor job

I did, and I have mixed feelings. While in Michigan, I worked for the UAW, at Lear-Siegler. I hated being in the Union, so I got myself hired at Texas Instruments (an open shop), moved to Houston, and left the union behind. But that's me. Others swear by unions, and if that is how they wish to work, then more power to them. Adam Smith himself said that EVERYTHING is exploitable, and that includes the sweat off a man's brow. If corporations can exploit labor resources, then I don't see why the laborers themselves can't exploit those resources too. After all, those resources (labor) belong to those who have them, and just as corporations can set a price on their products, workers also have the right to set a price and benefit amount on their labor as well. It's capitalism all around. If you want to bust down the unions, then you might as well begin dictating how much a company should be allowed to sell its products for. If one is bad, then so is the other. Labor is a commodity too, and of course, it belongs to the owners of that commodity. If you don't agree with that, then crap, I will agree with you. Let me buy a gun, go to the nearest electronics store, and demand a flat screen TV for 10 bucks. LOL.

Explain how rioting in the streets will produce jobs and better pay for the unemployed, under employed, and the under paid?

I imagine if the jobs were there, people wouldn't be unemployed.
If people are under employed, there isn't enough work for them to do.
If they are underpaid, maybe they should ask for a raise. Maybe they'll get it, maybe the boss just can't afford it.

This sounds like a Francis Fox Piven plan to me. Get the unemployed and the poor to rise up and demand so much that the government can't afford it. Then the economy collapses and the socialists step in to save the day.

I worked in one for ten yrs. Everytime Unions tried to step in we told them we were perfectly happy. No need to fix something that ain't broke. One of our branches did unionize and they ended up with less pay than us, more lay-offs, and they no longer had the "one big happy family" that we did.
I don't know why union people think they would automatically be treated like **** if they weren't unionized.
Bosses like and need productive workers and are willing to compensate them. It's when Unions step in and demand more than the business can afford and still be profitable, those jobs go away along with the business. I saw a whole town get screwed that way.

Again...there is a difference between private union and public union. Majority of public unions are the ones causing these problems with state budgets.

If you'll read you'll see that it was the corrupt, lazy, brutal, and incompetent who wanted the union to come in. Many unions members are simply working folks who succumb to the threats of the goons.

Did I have a labor job? When I was young, I got a job digging a ditch. That was labor. Then I was labor in a factory but I was fired when I refused to join the union. I went to another factory as labor in the warehouse and made more and had better working conditions than I did in the lovely union shop. Then it was time to do my time in the military. When I returned I became a police officer. As a police officer I never joing a union in spite of threats and harrassment. It had never been my dream to be a police officer associated with organized crime.

Just saying that when their stated goal is "change for the better" that doesn't really sound so evil. I'm skeptical as to whether they'll be able to produce that...

You kids go ahead..WI has already done damage.....we will meet you in the streets...bring weapons.

All the while his dad reaped those benefits, he more than likely wasn't a whiney bastard and went to work everyday and did his ****ing job.

And, the unions are going to change what, exactly?
