U.S. and Mexican officials say the grotesque violence is a symptom the cartels have been wounded by police and soldiers. “It may seem contradictory, but the unfortunate level of violence is a sign of success in the fight against drugs,” said Michele Leonhart, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The cartels “are like caged animals, attacking one another,” she added.

There you have it, in order to win this mindless war (one of many mindless wars we are in) is to kill more. Alot bloodthirsty scumbags in the government its sickening but not surprising since killing is one of the few things the government is good at (sadly).

Really? So do tell me O' Drug Warrior what is victory in this mindless war?

I don't really legitimately answer to posts that include smartass insults. Drop the name calling and we might be able to have a decent conversation about this.

Translation: I got nothing

No, it was exactly as I stated it. If you drop the smartass pretense and act like you have some manners, you might be surprised at what you discover.

Sounds like you're trying to pick a fight and bait Nonplussed into it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Every forum has children.

What I find so funny is that because I agreed with the core assessment of the lady in the article, suddenly I am "O' Drug Warrior". What the child doesn't realize is that I am dead set against the war on drugs and even worked on the campaign for Norml. But don't let assumptions get in the way of flinging smartassed insults when emotional meltdowns are on the way. LOL

Moderator's Warning:
Chevy, behave. You're being overly aggressive and arguably trolling. I know this is a passionate subject for you but perhaps you'd like to keep the snarkiness on hold until you have some more substance to argue against, or people may decide not to respond at all.

Now, you know I'm not a prohibitionist.

However, the woman never said "a thousand dead children is a good sign." What she said, in essence, was it was a sign of the cartel's desperation, that they were being damaged by police/military activity.

Now we can debate whether that is actually true or not, or how significant it is, but in fact the stats on the dead kids doesn't really tell us much. We don't know how many of them actually died in cartel-related violence. We don't know how many of them were ACTUALLY "innocent children" and how many of them were actually, themselves, teenage cartel members, street dealers, runners, etc.

Salon.com kinda overhyped the whole thing a bit, imho.

You said nothing wrong.

The way you win a debate is out talk your opponent using better information presented in a cogent manner.

To win a game of any kind is to outplay your adversary, out scoring them.

To win a war is through attrition which means: The action or process of gradually reducing the strength or effectiveness of someone or something through sustained attack or pressure.

This means taking out the bad guys and everything they use to conduct their side of the War.

What I see as a problem is that we have begun to label fight's against such things a drugs as Wars, and once tou do that you have to be willing to WIN!

We no longer fight actual boots on the ground Wars to win. We seem to want to fight long enough to get tired of the losses and cost then invent a new one and move on.

Now we have a confusing policy that gets more confusing as time goes by with little or no clear achievable goals or exit plan.

FIGHT TO WIN OR KEEP YOUR DAMN MOUTH SHUT.

Right, so make all drugs legal and get the criminal element, driven by big profit, out of the business. I was stationed in Japan and Vietnam in the 1960's and neither had illegal drugs and no discernible drug problems. All drugs seemed to be legal in both countries. It's like Prohibition. Al Capone was the biggest supporter of Prohibition laws because they kept him in business. Drug dealers want lots of drug laws for the same reason. It is not complicated, just follow the money trails.

I don't think you quite get the issue - the DRUG CARTELS are causing the deaths of all of these kids.

Not US

victims of Mexican drug cartel violence increasingly include children, who are being specifically targeted in order to terrorize people and intimidate potential business rivals:

The children’s rights group estimates that 994 people younger than 18 were killed in drug-related violence between late 2006 and late 2010, based on media accounts, which are incomplete because newspapers are often too intimidated to report drug-related crimes.
[...]
Government figures include all homicides of people younger than 17, capturing victims whose murders might not have been related to drugs or organized crime. In 2009, the last year for which there is data, 1,180 children were killed, half in shootings.

To suggest taht the way to "solve this" is to just "let the drug cartels have at it" is ridiculous

Are you remotely aware of the situation that's going on IN Mexico - not even within our own borders? THOSANDS - parents, children, police, elected officials, have been murdered even BEFORE we started to really notice and try to intervene.

I think you're foolishly ignoring the broader situation - the cartels ARE creating these problems and they're TRYING to blame their foul actions on US like we're a scapegoat. "Just leave us alone and let us be bad and we won't hurt anyone."

Throughout their history they have proven that this is NOT the way they work - teh more they're left unchecked the MORE wrong **** they get away with.

You chop off one head of the hydra and a few grow back to fight amongst themselves to replace the one that was eradicated. Unfortunately this exterminate your way to the top funneling results in the replacement heads being bigger badder, more cruel and more unscrupulous than the heads that came before it.

We made it hard to do business and closed off the smuggling routes overseas via Columbia and through the air, and this resulted in funneling all the drug trafficking through Mexico allowing them to take control of the weakened position of the Columbians -who look like ***** cats in comparison. I wonder how many veterans in the DEA secretly wish they had the Columbian cartels back.

The blood bath in Mexico is not a sign of us "winning" anything, it is a sign of the inevitable evolution of bigger, badder and more evil replacements in this survival of the fittest game of whack a mole. If there were not insane profits to be had and billions of dollars to drive the violence then we would be "winning" this war. Of course there are simple solutions to denying the profits, but to all to many this would be unthinkable, ending the prohibition that gave rise the the hydra in the first place.

So - what sense would it make, then, to back off now - regardless of why they're 'grown in evilness' - if we stopped, now, we would just be unleashing that larger 'evilness' o neveryone and still leading us on a path to nowhere.

Damned if we do - damned if we don't.

It's not a real war until you start killing children, anyway. Maybe we're finally ready to sit at the grown-ups' table.

I am not advocating backing off, I am advocating a different strategy, which is starving them (by removing demand for their product) and in time they will dwindle to a shadow of their former self without the billions of US dollars to fuel their regeneration.

Instead of lopping of heads over and over only to watch the hydra regenerate we need to sever the main stalk which fuels the regeneration.

Probably not the most sensitive way to say it but she was technically correct in her assessment.

No, the US is losing the "War on Drugs", and losing it for one specific reason:

Prohibition never works.

Product bans in the US do nothing more than create lucrative business opportunities for the unscrupulous. As a result, billions of dollars of capital are exported from the nation while, simultaneously, the government wastes tens of billions of dollars attempting to prevent the influx of drugs...while, also simultaneously, it refuses to take any action against the influx of illegal aliens who are the most likely carriers of those drugs, and those people take jobs from Americans, depress the wage market, and depress tax revenues.

That's the failure of a government attempting to ban substances, which is has no Constitutional authority to do, and refusing to control the borders to prevent illegal entry by persons, which is a principal Constitutional mandate.

What you're advocating is the idiocity of Needle Park and all it's glorious stupidity.

No I am advocating divorcing ourselves from the distractions of a manufactured criminal problem. One the divorce is in place we then double down and focus all of our resources squarely upon dealing with our drug problem sans distractions and diversions.
