I'm taking Afghanistan culture to mean a certain type of Islamic culture - of which varying types exist in Afghanistan.

I went to college with many female Muslims and they would disagree. You could say the same about Christianity and specifically Catholicism, but it all depends on how you interpret the religious texts and ideas.

Edit: After the fall of the Taliban, the conditions of women in Afghanistan have improved a lot.

People should essentially be free to choose to participate in cultural traditions, if we are to believe in humanitarian ideals. Yes, things have gotten better for women since the fall of the Taliban, but there really wasn't any other direction to go but up. Educating women, and freeing them is the key to ME moderation. If women over there choose to cover themselves according to the traditions they embrace, so be it. I do not care if they do. Its the treatment of women who do not want to cover themselves that concerns me.

The status of women in Afghanistan is still deplorable, the little improvement being limited mostly to urban areas, and is only slightly improved overall from that when the Taliban was in control.

Idealogues who have predetermined that they must act as apologists any time the issue is that of human rights in the Islamic might try to paint a rosy picture, but they only do so to try to assuage their sense of guilt over the realization they talk out of both sides of their mouth where human rights are concerned. They advocate one set of human rights when concerning us, but look the other way when concerning them. It is nothing but hypocrisy of the highest order and while it may masquerade as a "liberal" characteristic, all it really represents is a slavish dogmatism where p.c. conformity has replaced any actual concern for liberal values.

I've got an idea... Lets bring all our troops home so they can dress like Americans and be with their families!! Then the peaceful Afghan people can go back to running their country the way they always have and not have to worry about how to blow up the none hijab wearing American woman. I'm just brain storming here though.

Right, and they don't have to honor ours, you know....like not to commit terror attacks.

Pull your head out of your ass for about three seconds a smell something other than your own ****. Maybe then you'll realize that mutual respect helps...a lot.
