That's a story that no one will believe, and on several levels.

Most of our servicewomen wore headscarves or at the very least kept their uniform hat on indoors when working with arabic civilians. They didnt need to be ordered...they found that the response was simply more positive. On a "give a ****" level...it didnt even register.

Not to be a fly in the ointment here, but what exactly is 'our' culture? We are the "melting pot" and that in and of itself, makes it difficult to define a set American culture - don't you think?

There is nothing to respect about the Afghanistan culture when it comes to their treatment of women.

Not at all, if you spend any significant amount of time outside of America, anywhere outside of America, American culture (and our sub-cultures) will become all that more definable to you. We are diverse, most assuredly, but we are all Americans.

True. But what is definable as being an "American" culture. What sorts of things do we do, that we would expect foreigners to adapt to if visiting the U.S.?

Funny spelling and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Especially if the Stop sign was misspelled.

Speaking English, wearing certain types of clothing, reaching a certain level of education, participating in democracy to get things done, etc. are all parts of American culture. We don't force people to do any of the three, but we certainly expect people to abide by them and alienate them if they don't. Yes, part of our culture is accepting different cultures (the melting pot) and this in itself is something else we expect immigrants to respect.

A lot of the things people do elsewhere in the world would not be welcome here.
