Earlier today, Glenn Beck's website The Blaze posted an audio file purported to depict former SEIU employee Stephen Lerner speaking to a small crowd at a left-wing convention in New York City. In the clip, the man The Blaze identifies as Lerner suggests that citizens and community organizing groups exert pressure on the financial system through a campaign of strikes and civil disobedience.
It shouldn't surprise anyone that Beck blows the import of the clip way out of proportion. But what's truly remarkable is that Beck responds to that supposedly dangerous rhetoric with full-throated apocalyptic panic:

Cable news often distills events down to a few sentences and then slips into analysis from a stable of talking heads who are mostly just experts in being talking heads. It's a skewed view of the world. A well-rounded education and a good breadth of experience is far more useful than targeted sound-bytes when it comes to understanding and engaging with the world. If you don't have a good BS detector, cable news can poison your ability to reason.

There’s a third thing that we could think about, what about if public employee unions, instead of them being on the defensive, put on the collective bargaining table when they negotiate they said we demand as a condition of negotiation that the government renegotiate, we want, we believe in good financial management. It’s crazy that you’re paying too much interest to your buddy the bankers. It’s a strike issue for us. We will strike unless you force the banks to relieve the debt of the city. I have said for a while that it seemed Obama was working to destroy our economy with stupid and failed spending plans like Cash for Clunkers which cost $28,000 per car and helped Toyota the most because it was written by fools. In the end it really helped nothing we were told it would.

Take all of this and Van Jones and you get a picture of what is going on, and why.
