Dems: Congress's Styrofoam cups could cause cancer

A group of Democrats complain Styrofoam cups in the House cafeteria could contain carcinogens.

In a letter to Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) and other Republican leaders, the nine Democrats say the Styrofoam cups and other dining materials could hold chemical components that could cause cancer. The Democrats are upset with the switch to Styrofoam from recyclable materials put into place when Democrats ran the House.

The letter asks Boehner to reconsider the switch away from recyclable to polystyrene-based foam containers, and warns that the health of visitors to the Capitol could be compromised.

So uhm, why are these cups legal to sell if they are dangerous?
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

I think the Dems have a point. Living green starts at the top. Why would Republicans change it? Just because they can? Please don't tell me we're going to get rabidly partisan over styrofoam v cardboard for coffee cups.

I love the sentiment that edges on *the cups in CONGRESS* - not necessarily "the cups in general availableto the mass public"

If something is too dangerous for them, why is it legal for us peons?

Perhaps there was some push to ban these cups that emt resistance because it was treated like government interference in business?

Personally, I'd have no problems seing styrofoam cups banned, but I would imagine that many people would oppose such a ban.

They should get rid of the styrofoam and go back to paper/cardboard. It can't cost that much more. Just curious as to what Nancy had them using that was so expensive. Was it from a "green" company that has to charge 10 times normal price or something?
Actually a better idea would be to have your own mugs or glasses and ditch the bottled water too.

No problem with removing it at all --- the stuff never deteriorates. I'd much rather paper or something biodegradable. No idea if it causes cancer or not, but Congressman and ladies can just choose not to use them and bring their own cups from home or go out and purchase a stainless steel travel cup or ceramic mug.

    Bloody whiners.
I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on whats being proposed here, hed agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute. - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

I don't know about this charge and I'll have to look into it.

But ah... lets not forget that once upon a time stuff like Asbestos was used to build buildings, and thelidamide was prescribed by doctors...

True. The real solution for the individuals to bring cups and plates from home.

But they could also oppose the use of Styrofoam in the cafeteria without having to use it themselves, for the reasons you point out as well.
