How many OTHER people in Congress are this ignorant and out of touch!?!? :doh

Washington (CNN)-GOP Sen. John McCain is in need of a tech lesson. In an appearance on ABC's "This Week," the senator from Arizona said that iPads and iPhones are "built in the United States of America." But every techie knows that they are, in fact, built in China.
McCain touted free trade agreements during the interview and voiced his agreement with President Obama that "innovation is the key to us being able to restore our economy." And though the designs for the iPad and iPhone are home grown in California, the actual manufacturing takes place overseas, in China.

"I think it's obviously a recognition of the reality and the trends, that cheaper, lower-cost labor products will usually prevail over products made in higher wage and income countries," he said, while commenting the abundance of foreign-made products in the American marketplace.

I wasn't sure where iPads and iPhones were made... but I wouldn't have guessed America.

He probably meant that they were designed in America. But regardless, his point was correct: Free trade agreements have made our economy stronger and our consumers wealthier.

Oh yeah - forgot about the Apple/China problem:

Apple Inc admits fault in scandal

The California-based maker of iPods, iPhones and iPads acknowledged for the first time in the Apple Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report on Tuesday that 137 workers at the Suzhou facility of Wintek, one of Apple's touch screen suppliers, had suffered adverse health effects following exposure to n-hexane, a chemical in cleaning agents used in some manufacturing processes.

But Jia Jingchuan, a 27-year-old victim at the Suzhou factory, said the Apple acknowledgment meant nothing to victims like him and that their rights continued to be under threat.

"I got a call last week from the company asking me to leave. They promised to give me 140,000 yuan ($21,253) in compensation for my departure, but only on condition that I sign an exemption agreement, which means the company would not take any responsibility if my health worsened in the future," he said.

"But what happened here is obviously a violation of its supplier code. Apple should give us a written apology for this."

Chronic worker dissatisfaction with management and wages at Wintek as well as the poison scandal erupted in violence in mid-January last year, when more than 2,000 employees gathered at the factory in Suzhou Industrial Park early one morning and smashed vehicles and factory facilities.

I've conducted an experiement where I as I'm shoping I'll randomly turnover a manufacturer's tag to see who country produced the product. I've looked a ceramics, textiles, electronic devices large and small and even some recreational equipment (camping, fishing gear and I'm not the outdoorsmen type) and have found that the majority of items in the aforementioned categories are either made in China, Tiawan, Japan, Korea or India and "packaged" in the U.S. You'll see tags that read, "Made in China", but "assembled" or "packaged" in the U.S. or Canada for distribution in the U.S.

It's sad really...no wonder we're losing our production edge and, thus, our dominance in the global marketplace. We buy everything and produce very little.

i just dont see it like that.. at all..
legislation written by those that would profit the most from the cheaper labor and little to no retribution for eco damages.

Hmmmm...

I'm not sure I agree with that entirely. While I do believe politicians and lobbyist are a bad mix because it really is a contridiction especially when viewed in the light of current events, I wouldn't say that all agreements with lobbyist lead to eco-disasters. Big oil, coal, and lubber...they've had their moments of blunder and national crisis for sure, but pharmacueticals...not quite in the same league although they, too, play a role in "big profits for gain towards the select few through agreed upon legislation". But eco damange...I can't say I agree with you there. Maybe a revolving door of clients in poor health, but certainly not bad for the eco-system.
