$101,091: Annual Compensation for Average Milwaukee Teacher

In our government run education system to nowhere........

...........every child is entitled to a subprime education.........and the Teachers Union delivers.

It may not be the best, but it is what we have, and if you didn't listen and learn, whose fault is it but yours? If you are learning disabled, sorry for that. If you were just too lazy to put forth an effort, the fault is yours.
My older sister and younger brother had the same teachers I did...., I learned a lot, they learned a little. I retired well, they are living in poverty. results tend to vary even within families. Results are not guaranteed, only the opportunity....

That's really quite interesting. So many times we hear that family life has a bearing with under-achievers. Your situation would seem to anecdotally disprove that notion. I really do think that motivation comes, first and foremost, from within.

You almost got a thanks. ;-) No conflict of interest?? My lily white...

If administrators belong to a professional association and the teachers belong to a different union and the Board of Education employing both of those is fine with it and legally has determined that there is no conflict of interest, then there is nothing for you to worry about.

As to your lily white ....... we have tanning booths for that sort of thing ... or back yards with high fences.... the results could put a smile upon somebodys face.;)

What we have is a statist government that punishes success while rewarding failure......and the teachers union, like all unions, exemplifies this. There is no gurantee a good teacher cant become a lousy teacher either.....actually it should be expected......considering the lack of merit pay.

And in the public schools that have a plethora of teachers that simply go through the motions........the only thing guranteed is a bloated teachers salary, gold plated health care, diamond inlayed pension........and a subprime education for every student.

What in the heck does Glenn Beck have to with it? Or the reporters on Fox? Please bash them on another thread.

I think they make plenty. I advocate ratcheting back their bargaining powers. Why would I post about the outrageous CEO salaries across the country? My tax dollars don't pay for those.

Because regardless of what you say you must be listening to these pundits if you actually have the opinion that teachers, police officers, and fireman are overpaid. That's why I ask. And your tax dollars are paying the salaries of CEOs who continuously catch major tax breaks (by the Bush cuts and Walkers in WI). You are outraged at teachers making $100k and less but not that CEOs across the country are banking more in respect to their other employees than ever?

That's how I know you watch and listen to conservative news. You are angry at nonsense.

---------------

MaggieD, can you show me one post from before this "scandal" in WI began where you complained about teacher unions?

Multiply 30 kids times what a baby sitter gets per hour....the baby sitter gets more.
Day care, average per month, is $600 for a toddler, so one link says. 30x600 is $18,000 per month......
Teachers should all quit teaching at schools and open day care centers, that teach.

Playing loose with the numbers? The average daycare center has to make her 'nut'. She has overhead to pay, insurance, health insurance, license & permits, the list is endless. So when you factor in all of these costs, what is left over is around a 10% profit margin, so says one link. A teacher has no such costs to incur, all her overhead is incurred by the taxpayer.

Using your numbers of $18,000 per month and paying the teacher a commiserate 10% profit margin leaves the teach a fair and equitable salary of $1,800 per month. Since she only works 9 months every year $1,800 multiplied by 9 months equates to a fair salary of $16,200 per year. Of course we need to pay her for the costs associated with her teaching degree (assuming a 4 year university) add in $50,000 amortized over her career of 30 years and she would be paid an extra (i'm rounding up) $1,700 per year.

Conclusion a fair salary for a public school teacher with a 4 year degree (according to you) would be $17,900 per year.

The "average daycare center worker" probably makes $10/hour -- if they're lucky. Good job, NeverGolfPar.

ALright man...... teachers hardly do any work. They are there for SIX hours a day! Thats 30 hours a WEEK! They are off around 2 days a month for whatever lame holiday comes around. Then they have THREE MONTHS OFF!!! Their job is EASY! At least 3 out of 10 people could walk in and do their job with ZERO training.
You know why its hard to get a teachers position? Because everyone and their cousin wants to be one! So they made it more difficult in Illinois to qualify. My friend Rob is a teacher. He used to be a retail book store manager. He said that was TWICE as difficult.

Lets not even get into how difficult it is to fire a crappy teacher! Or their INSANE pensions! Beginning teachers should make no more than $27K a year and after ten years make no more than $37K a year. Now divide that salary by NINE...... NOT 12 since they only work 9 months. Plus they need to pay 20% of their benefits.

Do you have kids? Do send them to public schools? Just curious...

Personally, I think public schools can be some of the worst and some of the best. My wealthy friends who have children send their kids to both public and private schools. Depending on the community, some local schools are amazing and have amazing teachers and faculty.

I don't listen to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh or any of the rest of the wingie people. I do my own homework and research. Public pensions happen to be a hot button for me which is why I speak so vehemently about them. Many teachers in suburban Chicago make more money than the Governor of our state. I'm not outraged by teachers making $100K and less. I'm outraged by teachers making $100K and more. And retiring at age 55 with pensions that cover, many times, 75% of their salaries.

You don't even understand these tax breaks you speak of. Do your homework.

That's how I know you watch and listen to conservative news. You are angry at nonsense.

No. I'm angry at a $4,000 property tax bill.

MaggieD, can you show me one post from before this "scandal" in WI began where you complained about teacher unions?

I'm not going to go looking...but if you PM Redress, I'm sure she'll confirm. Look, I have a very strong opinion on this. I've done my homework. I've written letters to the editor and had them published in the Chicago Tribune and the Daily Herald. You're not going to change it. The system is fundamentally flawed. I've done my homework. And either you haven't done yours, or you are the recipient of a public pension.

Holy Tax Bill! I've got nearly 3 times that sf and my property tax is $4600.

Like Maggie I too live in the state of Illinois. Here is my breakdown. I live in a 980 sq condo, 1 1/2 bath, 2 bedroom, no garage. Here is my 2009 property tax bill of $7,400.36 from the cook country treasurers office.

Community College: $191.56
High School District: $2,590.60
Grade School: $2,387.44
School Taxes Total: $5,169.60

My tax bill does not break down pensions (though it did a few years back--Thank you Maria Pappas)

Here a random sample of the teachers salaries from my school district:
LaBotz, Mary $98,806
Leyden, Glen $57,577
Lucchetti, Richard $125,324
Luque, Mary $109,357
Lyke, Marcus $111,970
Lynch, Pamela $53,893
Maka, Tanya $91,241
Maniatis, Christopher $91,978
Mansfield, Edward $276,014
Marks, Janet $84,991
Mattia, Terrence $77,843
Matys, Jaime $54,405
Maul, Lorrie $104,846
Mc Laughlin, James $121,741
McAlister, Scott $117,187
McCabe, Elizabeth $94,402
McCarthy, Brian $105,616
McClain, Daniel $67,165
McGuire, Sheila $56,909
McKee, Paul $53,167
McLaughlin, Brian $107,803
Meany, Kelly $105,740

Link: Family Taxpayers Foundation (thanks MaggieD;-))

Now you know two things about me 1) why I get pissed over this topic 2) after seeing my property tax bill, you now know why we in Illinois are so pissed over our governor passing a 67% INCOME tax increase!!! We already get raped in property taxes.

This hatred for teachers the right has whipped up is mind-blowing. I can't believe people actually think teachers have some cushy job.

And here's a sampling of the pensions from this same district:

You'll have to click the link: http://www.pioneerlocal.com/pioneer...b-061010-s1.article?appSession=98599589792826

Remember, these salaries do not include benefits. And the pensions don't show that the teachers' health insurance is being paid for 'til age 65 at the rate they were charged whent they retired.

Don't talk to Illinoisans about teacher pensions and bennies. We're a Democratic state and taxpayers are being scrood.

PS -- Social Security retirement max? $29,000. And we pay 7. something % in order to get it. Teachers? Well, Wisconsin was paying, what was it? 1%??

You think $100K is appropriate compensation for a position that typically recruits from the bottom third of college grads, has almost total job security regardless of performance, and requires something like 35 hours per week, for 36 weeks per year?

Give me a freaking break. I didn't earn that much for the first couple years after I had my freaking MBA and was $150K in debt from school...and I was working a lot more hours than that, at a position that required a lot more work/training.

Being be teacher requires a grad degree too... at least where I am from. But I went college with somebody who got a bachelor in Accounting and MIS, and got a job fresh out of college making six figures... The job was in San Fransisco so take into account the high cost of living, but it's still impressive.

It's not impossible to get an income like that quickly in some fields... CFAs, I know can do it in 2 to 3 years.

No hatred for teachers here. I have two family members who are teachers in the Chicago Public School District. This is all about shining light on excess and the sodomization of taxpayers by Democrats.

BTW: For those of you appalled as I am about these teachers salaries. The average class size of this school district is only 18.3 students per class room, yet the performance of the school is only in the 30th percentile for all schools in the state. If it isn't large class sizes holding back our students from achieving excellence what is? Could it be the average teachers salary of $81,552 per year? Or the 17.8 MILLION dollars this particular school district spends on teachers salaries each year! Could it be that this school district has 218 teachers and administrators but only requires 173 teachers and administrators consistent with its student size of 3,000 coupled with an average class size of only 18.3 students (only 10 administrators according to their website)? What the hell are the 45 teachers doing on this bloated payroll who don't belong...obviously not teaching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sad thing is; such statistics are par for the course in Illinois. My guess it is par for the course in most schools across this nation. Those of you who do not see this are either blind or stupid...then again maybe you were educated at this particular institution and excellence is most certainly is not what is strived for.

That's really quite interesting. So many times we hear that family life has a bearing with under-achievers. Your situation would seem to anecdotally disprove that notion. I really do think that motivation comes, first and foremost, from within.

No, not always....tho it did with me. I looked around and saw that my school friends had good parents who encouraged them. My parents were totally passive on education. I had heard the story about my dad hanging on to a night watchman job til he was 38 and father of 5 kids, then he finally got into an apprenticeship and 5 years later started making good money. I started getting my technical training within months after high school. It was obvious that waiting 20 years wasn't very smart.
My siblings weren't motivated, they were discouraged. There was no extra help when they first needed it...

What we have is a statist government that punishes success while rewarding failure......and the teachers union, like all unions, exemplifies this. There is no reward for teachers that put forth the effort to ensure our children have the ability to "take" a good education.....just as there is no punishment for the absolutely pathetic teachers that put forth no effort.....and no way to get rid of them.

bla, bla, bla, empty and unsubstantiated rhetoric, bla, bla, blas....if you didn't get an education, and any of your classmates did, it must be your fault. Teachers can't overcome 6 years of bad parenting. It isn't their job to undo the damage already done....

How about a small group of teachers starting their own daycare, and hire no helpers....? The daycare centers near me are owned and operated by people driving fancy german cars. My son worked for one during a couple summers. They must be doing something right....

This hatred for teachers the right has whipped up is mind-blowing. I can't believe people actually think teachers have some cushy job.

The right wing always needs a monster to attack. Without that the attention would turn to their own hollow falsehoods and they would fool very few with their smoke and mirrors. So there is always a convenient enemy to match upon and save America from. Now - its teachers and unions. Someoneelse will get their turn tomorrow to play the Frankenstein monster.

classic propaganda.....deflect, assign blame to others..most of the Arab world thinks that the USA is the reason they are poor, instead of seeing that their own leaders are taking the wealth of their nations for themselves. North Koreans think we are still the reason they are starving while dear leader lives like a king....
Can it happen here?
I though we were smarter than that....guess not.

Yep kinda like what you do, lets see, it's not the teachers fault for our failing educational system, after all if one kid gets a good education then everyone can right ? So it's the students or his parents fault if they don't … isn't that what you said?

So if one person can become rich in this country, by that same standard everyone can, and if they don't, then isn't it that persons fault and no one else's?

If one person comes off the welfare rolls and makes a comfortable living for themselves, then those that don't only have themselves to blame correct. It's no one else's fault

now surely you aren't going to use classic propaganda.....deflect, assign blame to others. Are you ?

Actually, I think this is completely appropriate compensation.

Im even fine with that salary.... BUT.... just as long as the government can afford it... meaning perfectly balanced budget. Never pay people more then you can. And Don't try to add a lot of high priced spending when you don't have the taxes to back it up.

If people ask for lower taxes and it passes, you HAVE to decrease spending. You can't Decrease taxes without decreasing spending and you can't increase spending without increasing taxes. UNLESS you take the spending from something else.

So my question is... in order for teachers to have this compensation, where do you want that money to come from, taxes? Social security? Policemen salary? fireman salary? governor's salary?
