If there is this huge shortfall, why have none of these pension funds collapsed today?

The answer is that these numbers are another example of right wing voodoo economics intentionally manufactured in the pursuit of a very purposeful extremist program that they want to implement into law.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

I check the numbers and find $60,000. The $100,000 figure has no credible source.
I found the document that describes Milwaukee Public Schools Department of Benefits & Insurance Services Health and Fringe Benefit Plans, Summary of Benefits Available to Teachers Contract: July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2013; updated 2/24/2011. It’s a PDF and several pages long. I don’t know how to post it in this thread.

The benefits are not quite as good as I had as an engineer for a large computer company. More later.

I just had a conversation with a woman I know today. I consider her to be somewhat lower class, certainly uneducated (she doesn't even have a GED.)

Turns out she makes about $50,000 a year working full-time at a grocery store. She just started last year, too, with little experience in her field.

True, I don't know what the minimum or average wage is in WI (the minimum wage in my state is over $8, so quite high) but if it is anything close to here, considering the amount of schooling teachers have to go through and the training, suddenly $50,000 doesn't seem like so much.

But the expectation by some is to get pay and benefits below middle class standards so more of the taxpayers money can go to corporations in tax cuts. A trade off is being made. You know they have promised Wisconsin corporations $120 million dollars in tax breaks over the next two years. That money has to come from somewhere, right?
