He acted within his authority (as far as I know). That's not the same as "did nothing wrong."

Re: Gov Christie suspends union members for fake calling out sick

You know what is funny, in the federal government .. the libbys are bashing the Republicans because they haven't tackled the big items, like SS and Medicare. So they say that republicans really aren't serious about cuts … mean while they say nothing of 4 years of Democratic control, that not only didn't offer a single cut in spending, but increase spending by some gawd awful percent.

One the state level, where the Governors are tackling the “big” items in their budget deficit ….. the libbys are right back at bashing Republicans ….bashing Republicans that just like they say Obama has done, in many cases when they were elected “inherited” their problems from democrats …..

They support and defend the stimulus, they support and defend the national debt now that Obama is running it up, they support and defend the war in Afghanistan... now that Obama is running it, they now support and defend keeping Gitmo open and running as usual, they now support and defend the Obama tax cuts for the rich, extended for 2 years the list is endless........of support and defend the very same polices that they bashed Bush for

They have every Republican already being beaten in 4 years, because their polls are down, because they are trying to fix the problem they “inherited” from years of Democratic run states. (in many cases) But when it's pointed out how “their” loved leader's numbers are down, they tell you how we must wait and see that 2 more years things can change …

What is clear is that we are dealing with bunch of hypocrites

How anyone in their right mind could possibly defend someone who lies to their employer so that they can get paid for a sick day when they are not sick, is beyond me.

It is in my mind the equivalent of stealing.

The only slightly sane reason I can see to defend such persons is if you have some personal stake in having such actions be allowed, in which case you are little better than said persons, and I pity your failings and misguided behavior.

A few years ago at an old job of mine we had an employee that called in sick. Later on in the day her boss was driving home and had to go through a road construction site in order to get home. As she was going by the person that holds the stop/slow sign she sees the employee that called in sick that very same day. Next day that employee was fired.

Do you believe that the boss was in the rights? Or was the employee unfairly fired?
The idea that a grown adult must justify time taken from the job because they have runny poop or a fever is something akin to childhood. Of course, that is exactly the type of relationship the right wing wants for workers and employers. They cannot bring back slavery or serfdom so paternalism is the next best thing.

More progressive employers have rejected the medieval "sick day" concept in favor of simply time away from work based on a contractual reward for time served on the job or a matter of an agreed upon contract clause.

That's ridiculous. If your sick take a sick day, if you want the day off, take a vacation day. Or take a day without pay. If you want to play hooky, don't lie about it and expect to get paid anyway.

It is not ridiculous. It is enlightened contractual worker rights. I work for the State legislature and there is no distinction between any sort of time away from the job. There is a formula for giving you time away to use at your own discretion for every number of hours you work. Many corporations do the same thing. This is called living in the 21st century as and adult without mommy to come in and look before you flush the toilet to make sure you really had diarrhea.

Really, most government jobs earn X number of vacation hours per pay period and X number of sick hours per pay period. Since this is an issue in NJ, I imagine that is true there. I guess that's the reason they're upset they were using paid sick leave when they should have used vacation time.

Then the union in question should have negotiated such a setup, rather than, apparently, one that separates "sick" days off from other types - otherwise, how could they reasonably be suspended if they did nothing wrong?

If a setup such as you describe were in place in this instance, there would be no issue, as they would simply have taken a day off at their discretion, if my understanding of your description is accurate.

Then what you and other critics of this event should do is to cite the exact language in the contract on usage of employee sick or leave time so it can be examined.
