Gov Christie suspends union members for fake calling out sick

The idea that a grown adult must justify time taken from the job because they have runny poop or a fever is something akin to childhood. Of course, that is exactly the type of relationship the right wing wants for workers and employers. They cannot bring back slavery or serfdom so paternalism is the next best thing.

More progressive employers have rejected the medieval "sick day" concept in favor of simply time away from work based on a contractual reward for time served on the job or a matter of an agreed upon contract clause.

That's ridiculous. If your sick take a sick day, if you want the day off, take a vacation day. Or take a day without pay. If you want to play hooky, don't lie about it and expect to get paid anyway.

It is not ridiculous. It is enlightened contractual worker rights. I work for the State legislature and there is no distinction between any sort of time away from the job. There is a formula for giving you time away to use at your own discretion for every number of hours you work. Many corporations do the same thing. This is called living in the 21st century as and adult without mommy to come in and look before you flush the toilet to make sure you really had diarrhea.

Really, most government jobs earn X number of vacation hours per pay period and X number of sick hours per pay period. Since this is an issue in NJ, I imagine that is true there. I guess that's the reason they're upset they were using paid sick leave when they should have used vacation time.

Then the union in question should have negotiated such a setup, rather than, apparently, one that separates "sick" days off from other types - otherwise, how could they reasonably be suspended if they did nothing wrong?

If a setup such as you describe were in place in this instance, there would be no issue, as they would simply have taken a day off at their discretion, if my understanding of your description is accurate.

Then what you and other critics of this event should do is to cite the exact language in the contract on usage of employee sick or leave time so it can be examined.

ummmm ... we aren't the critics ... we agree with what happened .. you are the critic .. I'm
feel the governor examined what he did ... before he did it.. to be sure he was within his rights

Then there should be no difficulty in you demonstrating just that.

Yes, I read the article. And it fails to contain the exact language in question.

Does it mention that they were suspended for using sick time inappropriately?

Without the specific contract language and other relevant information, its just speculation.

You think the governor speculated on the language? But, does it say they were suspended for using sick leave inappropriately?

I am throwing the BS flag, ths is the silliest post I've read in some time.

Here is the fact, the Governor did what he did, if you want to prove it to be wrong, go ahead and try, I don't have to show anything, the deed is done. Common sense tells me that will all the s**t going on with the unions, that this was well looked into before the action was taken. If not … then shame on him.

Now on the other hand, if these teachers could have taken a personal day or vacation day to avoid being fired, and were too damn stupid to do so, then I have to wonder what they are doing in the teaching profession to begin with.

How anyone in their right mind could possibly defend someone who lies to their employer so that they can get paid for a sick day when they are not sick, is beyond me.

It is in my mind the equivalent of stealing.

i believe the word you are looking for is "fraud".

A "vacation" is taken with prior approval so the employer can adjust his schedule. Same for so-called "personal days" and other times off not related to illness. A "sick day" is an emergency and expected to be sporadic. The employer doesn't usually have to worry about half his shop not coming in because of illness and the present employees can usually cover for the occasional absentee.

When an entire union decides to run off and use a sick day because they can't get permission for everyone to take off on the same day, they're unconsionably putting the employer's mission at risk. If a school is closed because 75% of the damn unionized teachers are pretending to be sick, all those parents have to call in to THEIR work and explain that they can't come in because their kid's teacher is a mobster. The economic circle of union damage is widened.

No absentee employees who can't show a valid doctor's note should probably be fired or disciplined. Absentee employees proven to be a union rally who called in sick should certainly be fired.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, any "doctor" who issued "sick notes" to healthy union members at a rally should lose their state-issued license to practice medicine and should face criminal fraud charges.

You should pick up your flag and attempt to deal with the issues. It makes you look so much more informed.

Which is your way of saying that you have no contractual language of any kind to use to prove anything. You claim that these people should be disciplined but you can show no real language to demonstrate that they did anything illegal or in violation of their contract.

Typical.

What is typical is your blind/deaf/dumb approach to any conduct that interferes with a union buddy. O.M.G. "There are none so blind as those who will not see." Your incredibility is rapidly becoming legendary.

And, as always, your sage answer is "prove it." When I want to disprove something, I do so....with links. So show us the language in any teachers' contract that says they can falsely use sick days to avoid taking personal ones. I'll wait.

Maggie - I am sorry you see asking for the facts as being so objectionable.

I learned long ago that a person is innocent until proven guilty. If you feel anyone has done anything wrong the burden is upon the accuser to show that it is so. Nobody has to prove they DID NOT DO IT.

This is America. That is the way it works here. And I like it that way.

In other words, ya' got nothin'.

It makes him look more informed than this comment made you.

Yeah!!!!! Get big government out of our lives. Right. Of course now Jabba the Guv is going to want to see your stool sample if you claim to have been ill. Jabba the Guv wants to be our mommy. Cute.

No sympathy for the people who were depending on the union workers to do their jobs?
174 developmentally disabled adults who depend on the county's services ended up "waiting for buses that never came."

In other words, ya' got nothin'.

Did you miss the point here? Its not ME who needs to have anything other than -"you made the accusation - you back it up with the facts". In America, that is the way it works. Nobody accused of anything needs to prove their innocence. Everyone is presumed innocent and it is up to the side making the accusation to buuild their case.

Which you have not done on this point.

Of course, this right wing rush to judgement is not at all surprising.
