I don't feel all that confident in the government to do the right thing. How do you know you don't have a bunch of horny IT guys just looking at young girls all day. Since they can spy on facebook how do you know they are not just looking at the pics of girls they find attractive? Or how do you know that they are not viewing porn that they find interesting and normally would not pay so that is why they are viewing? Do you get?

Short answer: I am familiar with open source reporting. I know what they do.

Potential is different from actual or reality. I'm a member of the NRA and solid supporter of the Second Amendment. This doesn't mean I check my brain at the door when considering things like a requirement that anyone buying a gun be of sound mind or that anyone who has been diagnosed by a psychiatrist as being likely to commit suicide or homocide should be barred from buying guns until their situation is resolved.

Same goes for the CIA or any law enforcement agency scrolling through public forums. Nothing wrong there. Tracking down someone just because they called the President or their Congressman an idiot would be a problem. That's why we should be vigilant about passing laws like the Patriot Act and be sufficiently active with our Congressional representatives to ensure they preserve our rights under the Constitution of the United States of America.

    As private.

It doesn't touch closed social networks, like Facebook

i'm sorry, I just don't buy that. Terrorists in the desert don't have time to log in and screw around with nonsense. I really believe that reports of so and so Islamic website is a snare. Theres more backround to it if you want to discuss Facebook. The New Yorker article on Zuckerman spying on his classmates emails and so forth with the software and his current projects and backdoors with other companies. Facebook is a whole another issue, it was created to spy. And some people invested in it for that reason. I'm talking about deliberately targeting people on websites. Like Centcom recently admitting they "correct people" online at blogs, forums etc.

Always wondered where those 'friends' came from that I never knew or added myself. :P
