Pulitzer Prize winning tax reporter, David Cay Johnston, has written a brilliant piece for tax.com exposing the truth about who really pays for the pension and benefits for public employees in Wisconsin.

Gov. Scott Walker says he wants state workers covered by collective bargaining agreements to “contribute more” to their pension and health insurance plans. Accepting Gov. Walker’ s assertions as fact, and failing to check, creates the impression that somehow the workers are getting something extra, a gift from taxpayers. They are not. Out of every dollar that funds Wisconsin’ s pension and health insurance plans for state workers, 100 cents comes from the state workers.

"Setting aside the exception I take to your referring to my ‘peddling’ anything, do you really not see the distinction between characterizing the pension plan as some unfair gift to state workers versus a deferral of the salaries to which they are entitled?

If you can’t see this distinction, I’m not quite sure what I can tell you that would make it appear more clearly. I presume you have a retirement plan funded by what you earn When the plan begins paying out to you, will that be some gift you’ve been given or simply the payout on the money- your money- that you put in?

As I’ve said, if you want to argue that the public employees should take a pay cut, fine. But call it what it is – a pay cut.

But when this argument is presented as these people getting some taxpayer benefit beyond getting paid their salaries for the work they do, just who is it that is peddling the misguided information?"

Characterizing the pension plan as deferred compensation is disingenuous. It is a pension plan. And whatever this Pullet Surprise writer calls it, it is still greater and sweeter than virtually any pension plan on the planet. Ridiculous.

First....dont use Rick Ungars own arguments from the comment section. As you can see......things are not going so well for Ricky down there.....

Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth........if you have a source of revenue for these bloated union salaries, gold plated health care, and diamond inlayed pensions.........besides THE TAXPAYER......let it and your argument here be known.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, where does the money come from to pay those public employees? :rofl

Re: The Wisconsin Lie Exposed – Taxpayers Actually Contribute Nothing To Public Emplo

Wisconsin public employees currently are only paying 6% toward their healthcare premiums. Governor Walkers proposal is implementing that they pay 12%, which is STILL nearly half the national average. To being with they're over compensated at it is, and average Wisconsin school teachers full compensation is $78,000 for a 180 day school year, which averages out to $433 dollars a day.

These people need to realize that public unions have guaranteed them money that they simply do not have, and that although they are paid for by the government, they are also intact to cuts in the budget. A major contribution to state debts nation wide is public pensions, you would not believe the percentage in Illinois, somewhere around 30-35%

The GOP's war on public employees is nothing more than a veiled attempt to take the focus off of their corporate bedbuddies and the billions of dollars of corporate welfare that they love to hand out.

Excellent point! Sadly, very few have take the time to learn about the situation in Wisconsin. Thank you for bringing this up!

You don't see corporations crying on the news when they receive increased coroprate taxes do you?

and the teachers have agreed to this. so what's the governor's problem?
Indeed they have, to what I've read the teacher seem to agree to everything proposed except Governor Walker's stand on collective bargaining. Teachers will accept the 12% increase, but would just end up bargaining for the difference to make it up, which is probably why they don't like the new proposed ban on collective bargaining.

nope. they've agreed to everything for this year. walker just wants to bust the union, and he shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

Re: The Wisconsin Lie Exposed – Taxpayers Actually Contribute Nothing To Public Emplo

right, who saved thousands of jobs?

How do you gauge, "jobs saved", again?

There shouldn't be any public employee unions to launder money for the Democrat party. This is the biggest rip-off of tax payers in history.

Then same can be said for you liberals with corporations. When it comes time to walk the walk unions can't step up to the plate, simple as that.

i'm sorry, could you please explain what that means?

You state that this Republican Governor is after all the unions just to "bust them" because he is incorporating them into the budget cuts, which in this day is particularly rare for the public sector. It's constantly happening in the private sector, you know the I just tax the rich and corporations more, but when corporations and rich do see tax hikes, which makes profits fall, you don't see them protesting and making headline news now do you? The corporate tax was just raised in Illinois to help cut the deficit, and they didn't throw a fit did they, and you don't see any in here say that democrats are trying to "bust" corporations, which in a sense democrats are doing in the same sense that "republicans are trying to bust unions," am I correct?

The private sector is under constant fire from the left. The public sector get hit one time and they're going haywire. When you look at it from an outside, non-bias persepctive is odd, consdering they employee around 88-90% of worker in this country. Wouldn't you want that overwhelming majority to have the most positive outlook?

There are approximately 154.4 million employed individuals in the US.[63] Small businesses are the largest employer in the country representing 53% of US workers.[64] The second largest share of employment belongs to large businesses, who employ a total of 38% of the US workforce.[64] A total of 91% of Americans are employed by the private sector. Government accounts for 8% of all US workers. Over 99% of all employing organizations in the US are small businesses.[64] The 30 million small businesses in the USA account for 64% of net new jobs (jobs created minus jobs lost).[64] 70% of jobs created in the last decade were by small business

I've looked this **** up so many times, I'm tired, Turtle. I believe the major union has agreed to their putting in 5.something% on their pensions and 12% on their medical. I say believe because there's absolutely nothing legal about their spoken words. Walker has said that's not good enough, since there are multiple unions involved and they would yet again find themselves in the position of negotiating these changes.

Also, please remember that teachers have defined benefit plans....not 401K's like the rest of the world.

So Maggie, the solution is to all see how can race to the bottom first? I obviously am from a different generation that you, but I was raised and taught that we all help each other climb as high as we can - not kick each other off the ladder so we all crash to the bottom.

So Maggie, the solution is to all see how can race to the bottom first? I obviously am from a different generation that you, but I was raised and taught that we all help each other climb as high as we can - not kick each other off the ladder so we all crash to the bottom.

Obviously? Huh. Well, I was raised and taught that we all help each other climb as high as we can as well. But there comes a time when you can't let someone step on you on their way up. There is absolutely no question in my mind that we have to rein in public sector pension costs; none; and no guilt associated with that at all -- no matter how hard you try to send some my way.

So. When is the public sector going to help the rest of us working stiffs climb our ladders? When will you make any acknowledgement at all of the truth -- that the public sector is getting very generous pensions so far above the private sector as to be a significant burden on the parents of the kids they teach?

I already know the answer to that from you, Haymarket. As a public pension recipient, as a former union steward (or whatever you called yourself), as a current potential double dipper with your state legislature, that answer would be: never. You wouldn't acknowledge the truth on this issue if it smacked you upside the head.
