"Al-Qaeda has established an emirate in Derna led by Abdelkarim al-Hasadi, a former Guantanamo detainee," Khaled Khaim said.

"They have an FM radio station and have begun to impose the burqa" (head-to-toe covering for women) and have "executed people who refuse to cooperate with them."

Derna is the capital of a province by the same name in the region of Cyrenaica, some 1,250 kilometers (775 miles) east of Libya's capital Tripoli. Al-Baida lies about 100 kilometers west of Derna.

Earlier, Italian Foreign Minister Francesco Franco Frattini said embattled Libyan leader Gaddafi had lost control of Cyrenaica and shared reports that an Islamic emirate had been declared there.

"It is a worrying development if radical Islam is only a few hundred kilometers away from the European Union's front door, but nothing can justify the violent death of hundreds of innocent civilians," he added.

Gaddafi ordered Lockerbie bombing: Ex-minister

Yeah, those poor innocent men being held in Gitmo. Looks like The West is going to have its hands full when all this is settled, and hopefully it will instill a big Shaddup and some sobriety into our friends... the pacifist European citizenry. The idjuts are on your doorstep. When all this clears... watchagonnadoaboutit?

Nice we stopped the Libbies nuke program and the nuke blackmarket... a result of Bush/Blair's Gulf War II. Of course IslamoNazi's would NEVER think of trying to exploit such technology if they had it.

Wow, Qadaffi and his ally Francesco Franco Frattini are spreading anti-demonstrator propaganda, and they are the only source of this news?

It must surely be true!!!

However, residents in the city have told reporters there is no substance to these rumors, which they claim the Libyan government is sowing to "scare Europe."

That's also in the article. And I have a hard time believing this for several reasons, not the least of which is that AQ has no experience running a government and they never have attempted to. In Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Afghanistan and Pakistan they've never step up any form of government, they've always been a group which distances itself from those kind of activities and focuses most of its resources on terrorist activities.

Also the source is Libya's deputy foreign minister. And I've got to say that's pretty speedy for AQ, unless they had some insider information about this revolution occurring months ago I don't see how they'd have any logistical support there. Of course if they were local AQ than logistical support wouldnt be as big of a factor since its already in place, but I find it hard to believe there was something like this just ready to spring out of the woodworks and take over a city of over 50,000 people.

Not to mention the fact that Al Qa'ida - any group that falls under that designation - doesn't have the resources.

Hell of a play, though. Divide and conquer. And he's guaranteed that if the West intervenes militarily to remove him from office, his enemies will inherit nothing but scorched earth.

Bravo.

All of the tribes in Libya except for Qadaffi's own tribe have declared war on him, and are sending every soldier they can to Tripoli to finish the job.
