Andrew Breitbart sued by Shirley Sherrod over damaging video

Freedom is breaking out all over the middle east, and this is all you people care about? Jesus.

Meh. They're finally catching on... bout time. Gonna put a dent in the flag burning business I'll bet.

but there were also MANY here that viewed the whole video and pointed out that during that video she expressed that what she had done was wrong and it helped her to see people in a different light. To this day, I cant see how anyone can view that video as anything other than what it was...a woman giving a speech to a conference and expressing her own weakness and the life altering lessons she learned from that experience.

I agree for those who saw the whole video. However, Breitbart edited that video to make her look like a racist, and to make it appear that she was saying something other than what she actually said.

On a personal note, I do not blame Sherrod for being highly pissed. I had a similar experience here in this forum, when someone edited my post in his quote, leaving out pertinent information, which made it look like I was taking a position I did not endorse at all. I was highly pissed too, and called him out for it. By the same token, I support Sherrod calling out Breitbart, and taking him all the way to the poor house. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of douchebaggery. And a douche bag is exactly what Breitbart is.

I really don't know what damages she can claim.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday he has offered to rehire the civil servant he forced to resign two days ago over her comments about race that were taken out of context in a brief video clip.
Vilsack said he offered Shirley Sherrod, who was the state director of rural development in Georgia, a unique new position at the agency but wouldn't go into details. Sherrod told The Associated Press she is considering the offer.
"I accept full responsibility with regret," Vilsack said at a news conference. "She's been put through hell. I could have and should have done a better job."

The part I bolded above is a difinitively false statement. You are assuming it is fact therefore, until you get past that the rest is at question.

He has not offered any explanation as to why someone would send him only a portion of the video. And who the person is. The owner of the video claimed that he had to get permission from the event promoter to release the video. Breitbart's story is problematic. And his own admission of putting the video on the web before checking it out.

As I showed earlier, Breitbart's actions easily meet the definition of defamation. He wanted to do harm to her reputation AND he admitted to not doing an due diligence/fact-checking.

As far as damages, her name was thrown about all over the right-wing media and blogs, every hack and Hanity wannabe was saying what a racist she is. In this very thread, people are still holding on to that false belief. Her professional reputation has been damaged. The evidence to her reputation is all over the web.

And let a jury decide what the emotional toll would be if a person was thrown under the bus and vilified at a national level.

Allah forbid you go after the people who actually called her 'racist' and such...

I promise...this will be the last time I say it...I saw that video as soon as it came out and several others here did as well. Breitbart showed both her admissions of bias and ALSO her growth and learning experience. We started discussing that video first thing in the morning on this site. I said it then, I'll say it now and be done with it...there was NOTHING inappropriate in that video first posted by Breitbart. It was not edited to show her as a racist.

Your accusation itself is totally false, and is based on a lie. The video was edited, in that a 2:38 CLIP was SELECTIVELY published by Breitbart to portray Sherrod as a racist, when the ENTIRE 43 MINUTE speech shows the actual context in which the statement was made, and if one views the ENTIRE 43 MINUTE speech, there is absolutely no way to conclude that she had made a racist statement.

I don't blame Sherrod for doing what she is doing. The video Breitbart posted caused her to be fired, and he deliberately edited it to try, and portray her as racist. What he did was unacceptable.

Seems as though Ms. Sherrod is taking this quite seriously. She has retained a team of four attorneys from the DC office of Kirkland & Ellis, with the lead being Thomas D. Yannucci.

Mr Yannucci is considered, if not the preeminent, one of the most preeminent plaintiffs defamation attorneys in the United States.

He's the attorney who represented GM in their suit against NBC over their 'enhancement' of exploding truck gas tanks.

Poor little Andrew is going to get taken to the cleaners. Its about time.

Well, it doesn't really matter much to me either way, but Sherrod's taking a big gamble here. If she loses or the case gets thrown out, there will be considerable egg on her face.

I swear...some of you people are as blinded by your hatred of Breitbart as you are of Beck. @ 1:44 in the original video, she states she did only what she had to do...at 1:54 in that same video she states, Thats when it was revealed to me thats its about poor and those who have, and not so much white, it is about white and black...but its not, you know...it opened my eyes

Not cut...not edited...and thats the same link posted from 19 July 2010 when this jumped off. We made the same observations then. That video shows her words...nothing more, nothing less. Yes...many people pounced on it and used it for personal politcal ideological gain and twisted it to fit. Just like a lot of you are doing now. Which makes you as bad as them. Maybe more so, ecause you are being hypocrites about it.

I'd bet my membership vs. yours she gets squat.

Id go one further...Id bet body parts that most of the people commenting on this never saw the originial OR the extended version and just squirt out their opinions based on the names involved.

Suuuuuuure it is. Tell that to the women who will be legally raped for simply existing.

If he deliberately edited the tape to make her appear racist when he knew the whole story, he should pay big time.

Maybe Sherrod isn't a racist but she sleeps with one.
By the way, I bumped up an old thread on this subject.

Sherrod Husband In Racially Charged Vid

Wow! That video didnt get much play!

I listened to most of the long version of that while workingnon some other stuff. I cant help but wonder if it is dubbed...you cant really see him speaking. I would have thought something liek that would have been shouted from the rooftops...
