meh...its 2 d's and 1 r...and not all that shocking. I'm still hoping the election talk doesn't pick up steam until 2012.

Meh, I wouldn't read much into the national mood based on who is retiring now. The people who have already announced that they're retiring are mostly 1) the people who actually want to retire, or 2) the people who are personally unpopular in their states, above and beyond the national mood. It would be foolish for anyone of either party who is up for reelection in 2012 to announce they won't seek reelection because of the results of the last election. Two years is an eternity in politics.

I think the most likely outcome is that Republicans will gain some Senate seats in 2012, simply because of the structural advantage (i.e. Democrats are defending more than twice as many seats as Republicans are). However, those predicting a landslide in either direction at this early date are mostly just partisan hacks engaging in some wishful thinking. There is always far too much uncertainty to predict the national mood two years out.

    I can't. This is important.
