Punishment Phase for Tom Delay begins today

Today, the punishment phase of Tom Delay's trial begins. Delay was found guilty of money laundering and racketeering. Punishment could be anywhere up to 99 years in prison, but since this is Delay's first conviction, there is a chance that he could end up on probation.

Note: Our lawmakers are themselves not above the law. In Texas, the rich and powerful frequently get away with their crimes, but today is not the day this is going to happen. Justice has prevailed.

He was found guilty - he misused money and broke the trust that his position gave him. He deserves jail time if for nothing else than a warning to others. I wish the law was as adamant about going after ALL officials who are so inclined to break the law and the public trust. First offense? I'd give him 10 years - though if he's a good boy, time off for good behavior.

They went easy on him. He got 3 years in prison and 10 years probation. He is appealing.

Wow - I'm actually a bit surprised he got jail time at all. I thought you're guess at probation was the most likely ... he'll appeal and probably get it either dismissed or at least knocked down to a 1 year or less, and even then, they'll probably compromise and he'll wear the GPS bracelet and give up his visa/passport.

Thank you for your answer. To be honest, I am somewhat pissed that a lot of people are defending Delay, and making excuses. Of course, real Conservatism means acknowleging responsibility, for with freedom comes responsibility. Remember Reagan? That is what he stood for. You are also a true Conservative, in the spirit of Reagan. :)
