Video of officer hitting man with baton

He told the cop to shut up? Not that the cop was right for beating him up, Im betting the kid will have SOME respect / fear for the law.

If I was there and known dude had it all recorded it would have been so fun the bull rush and deck the cop, attempting to put him under citizens arrest. Of course it would probably end bad but you got to do what you think is right. A bully with a badge still needs to be dealth with.

Anyone has a right to tell anyone to shut the **** up. And anyone should have a right to not shut the **** up if they don't feel like it.

Is there a story to go along with this?

The lack of context makes it hard to know what was going on.

Granted it doesn't look good, but there are a lot of things we don't know from the video.

What crime was this man suspected of? What had he done prior to the beginning of the video?

What was the subject doing when he dropped below the picture line and the cop used his baton and pepperspray on him?

Who were those other guys standing around so casually?

Lots of missing pieces to the puzzle. I wouldn't want to judge it without knowing the answers.

I think sh*t like this happens more often than people like to think (although nothing like it has ever happened to me). Time and time again, it seems like it is demonstrated that the type of people attracted to law enforcement are the exact type that should never be given any type of authority whatsoever. And it makes you think . . . what else goes on? Fudging police reports? Probably. And that is probably even more dangerous than a beating.

Thank god for video cameras. I hope this officer goes to jail as well as is fired.

ST. LOUIS • Police said today that officers who use force are required to prepare reports explaining their actions and who was injured or killed.

No report was filed and no arrest made in the New Year's Day incident involving a patrolman videotaped hitting a man with a baton and spraying him with pepper spray, police have said.

The police department said it is investigating why no reports were filled out detailing what happened. Police said internal affairs detectives are trying to interview everyone involved in the 2:30 a.m. encounter at a Shell gas station at 1815 Arsenal Street.
The gas station owner identified the patrolman as Dustin Ries, 37, who he said was off-duty and providing security from a substation on the property. Police said the officer was put on administrative duty Tuesday, though the department has refused to identify him or discuss details of the incident unless the investigation results in charges or disciplinary action.

Ries, who could not be reached Wednesday, received two one-day suspension from separate department rule violations in 2005, a police spokeswoman said. She would not disclose details of the incidents but said they were not the result of citizen complaints.

It says later in the article that the officer has been named in two separate lawsuits for using excessive force in the past. He should have been gone long ago.

    Some very obvious 'wrongs' here...

1-You have to snap your wrist with the baton...its a striking weapon not a club. The heft is in the handle. Poor form and technique.

2-He wasnt a cop...he was a security guard. Yes. I know he was ALSO employed as a cop but it was obvious before I read the story that he was rentacop...not Barney. This isnt an instance of police brutality.

He should of course be fired. He and the station owner will likely be sued. Depending on the circumstances (we dont see any of the details leading to the video), he is either guilty of excessive force or assault.

Yup, looks bad. I hope he is soon de-badged and charged with suitable crimes.

Security guard or not, beating a man for saying 'shut up' is ridiculous, and he should be punished for doing so. Also, I know some people, myself included, would just love to bull rush that assinine rent-a-cop, but doing so in this instance would seem rather foolish with three other large men stadning around that area. In fact what were those guys doing? Where they assisting the security officer, freinds of the man getting beaten?

Violence is NOT the answer. Recording his actions ARE. One person recording.... the other walking up to that cop/security guy and talking to him IS the proper thing to do.
If there was only ONE of you? Then just recording what happened.
