Probably nobody outside of Texas has heard of Gene Kelton, but he was one hell of a blues guitar player out of Baytown, on the outskirts of Houston. He was killed yesterday, when his car crashed into a school bus. Several kids on the bus, along with the bus driver, were injured in the crash. It was one hell of an accident. They are doing an autopsy on Kelton to see if he was under the influence of alcohol, but I can tell you he probably was. Drinking and driving has taken another life, not to mention hurting some innocent kids who were on that bus, anticipating what they were going to do when they got home, when their plans were changed by someone who broke the law.

I am currently on probation for DWI. I drank 3 beers a year and a half ago when I shouldn't have, and then drove. I got caught. I went to jail. I got convicted. I got probation for 2 years, and probaton in Texas is not easy. But, you know what? I also got what I deserved. Texas has very tough DWI laws, but I agree with them. Better going through hell from a conviction than paying an even higher price - Death or injury to yourself and others.

Rest in peace, Gene. I am sorry that you did not have a chance to learn a lesson about DWI. If you had lived, though, you would be in jail, which is where you would belong, and where a lesson could have been learned.

What a colossal waste of talent. :(

This is why drinking at home, alone, is always the best plan. Sorry for your loss, Dana.
 
Thanks for that Dan! I clicked on the thread to find out who Gene Kelton was. What a surprise. At one time I was a frequent driver while drinking myself. I was lucky enough not to get caught.
I stopped when I came to the conclusion that
  1. I could kill someone.
  2. Getting caught is expensive in terms of money and possible consequences
  3. If you have been drinking and are in an accident, you will get charged, regardless of actual fault.
  4. One of these things WILL happen at some time.
I wish more people would realize the seriousness of DWI. I frequently see people that hop behind the wheel after driving and think nothing of it. Often I see a husband / wife together, she will not be drinking and he will drive. It drives me NUTS why even take the chance?
Kudos to you for realizing your actions have consequences, and adjusting your behavior accordingly.

My ex-wife and I were hit by a drunk driver three months before our wedding. There were lots of surgeries. It changed our lives.
