9/11 First responders speak out on 'Daily Show'

You have shown none of those things in the bill. You simply are a water carrying toadie for the GOP acting as their public relations man on this site. A drastic reduction does not yield the "same benefits" no matter what partisan spin you attempt to put on it.

The Republicans tried to kill this bill and it was only extraordinary efforts to show them to be the self centered Scrooges that they are that propelled them to finally support the effort. Jon Stewart played one of the Dicken's spirits and scared them into support simply not to continue with the Scrooge routine which was damaging their rep.

No, Republicans did not try to kill the bill. They took the fat, pork, and giveaways to lawyers out of it making it a good bill. Before it was a bad bill.

What fat, pork and giveaways? Prove that.

What fat, pork and giveaways? Prove that.

One example: Capped attorney fees for obtaining funds from program at 10%. Before, many had contingency fee contracts as much as 40% to 50% of the money obtained. Would you rather the victims get the money, or a bunch of greedy trial lawyers??

Read th ****ing bill like we did. The Dems caved because they knew it was not going to pass as is, with all the giveaways and costs.

Read a news article in the last month about it. Geez. Do we have to do everything for you?

So it should be easy for you to tell me about the pork and waste. I read it - just like you did - and I found nothing objectionable. So now it back on you to prove your allegations of pork and waste.

The Republican war against attorneys who represent victims is a long standing one. Their dream is to create a situation where people cannot bring suit because no good lawyer will take the case for such a small amount.

That is not fat, pork or waste.

And what is your opinion of the Democrats for caving in on this point?

Gotcha... you would prefer fat cat attorneys get half of the money rather than the poor victims that need it... Your priorities are crystal clear.

Uh.. NO. read again please. I simply accept the reality of the world we live in. Filing suit and doing all the work necessary to win it can be very time consuming and very expensive. Attorneys take a percentage as their fee and that is how they are normally paid. If you cut those fees by 2/3, the end result may very well be fewer attorneys to take these cases which translates into fewer victims getting justice in the courts. I want people to get justice in the courts. Don't you also want that? I do not want to place manacles and handcuffs on compensation which will have that effect.

I am a realist who accepts that the Republicans held the 911 victims hostage and we were only able to get them 60% of the loaf and not the entire loaf. If that money should not prove to be enough to properly take care of these true American heroes, we can hopefully come back in the future and do this all over again.

Ahhh, but that's the whole point of this bill. No attorney is needed to get compensation, the individuals can get the same amount of money with or without attorney representation.
The attorneys are simply skimming most of the money away and putting it into their pockets. Funny how libs hate it when fat cats take money designated for poor victims EXCEPT when the fat cat is a lawyer. Victims and their families have already been paid over 38 billion dollars by the way, but of course if was left up to you and your ilk, attorneys would have (and maybe did) gotten over 15 billion dollars.

Funny how they're heroes and we "owe everything to them" until it's the democrats that propose to help them, and all of a sudden its a problem. Oh well, better luck next time heroes that we owe everything to, republicans have politics to play :2wave:

So, you were 100% in favor of the Democrats allowing the lawyers to get a huge chunk of the money that should go to the first responders then? IS that what you're saying???

Perhaps you missed my earlier posts #81 and 84?

I want the first responders to get every single penny that they need and is due to them. In our society, sometimes justice is only possible with the assistance of proper legal representation and I certainly want them to have that proper legal representation.

Funny how they're heroes and we "owe everything to them" until it's Republicans that propose that all the money allocated to help them actually goes to help them rather than to greedy trial lawyers. Oh well, better luck next time heroes that we owe everything to, Dems would rather pay off a major campaign contributing group rather than alleviate your suffering.

See how easy red herrings are ???

Is it just me? Notwithstanding the emotions flying around here (Politically intentional to be sure) but how is the "first responders" plight, any more, or less justified than any joe smo dealing with the same work related/insurance issues? Why do they get some special treatment by congress? It is for this that "entitlement" is a perfect description. It absolutely is an entitlement. Those 1st responders knew what they were getting into when they put on the jackets. I'm sick and tired of people wanting more for something they knew full well was their freaking JOB. Get it.. It's was your JOB to go into a burning building. Yes, some men, perhaps many men would cower at the thought of running into a burning building.. Those men and woman get filtered out pretty quickly.. What's left are the courageous. However, I see no inherent responsibility by society to make special reparations for them? Don't you all get it? This is what's wrong with the US today. Everyone says screw you, until it's time they got screwed, then they're all on board for the hand outs.. We're so domed, I see no way of reversing this trend in American entitlement culture?? None at all?? All those first responders, sorry to say this had it pretty good before 9/11, and if all played out like they had imagined they'd all be retired by age 45 -50, all with a nice house, kids college paid for, a boat, and nice vacations every year, ALL I might add on the tax payers dime. The fact some of them are facing tough times is IMO no justification to change the entire system to make it even a sweeter ride..

Life's a bitch!! For everyone!!!!!!!

I suppose the same thing could apply to the soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan, right?
