The reality is a simple one: the Republicans are holding this bill up now, today, in the present. The Democrats, including the President, are in support of it. That is the reality no matter how much you want to play 'gotcha' or justify some political angle.
But those are just dull, dry old facts. Playing "gotcha" and spinning events for some kind of political point, then leaping and hooting about how great you are is much more fun.

All I care about is the bill before the Congress today that is supported by the President and Democrats but is being stopped by Republicans. That trumps everything. I don't give a sack of garden manure about anything but getting this bill passed to help these true American heroes in their need.
Duly noted. I'm sure you will NEVER criticize a Republican for flip flopping their position EVER, right ??

The major changes in the bill were made this week, long after Obama flip flopped.

The January news article uses a cost figure of over 10 billion.
The bill stopped last week was over 9 billion.
You do not call that a significant change? A billion dollars is a lot of money. And I would strongly suspect a careful reading of the bill that existed in January and the bill before Congress last Thursday had other changes as well.

But as I have said - it matters not to me about this entire silly 'flip' issue. All that matters to me is getting a bill passed to help these American heroes who need it.

not as significant as the actual change...

Tentative Deal Reached on 9/11 Health Bill - WSJ.com
Republican and Democratic senators struck a tentative deal to approve an aid bill for Ground Zero workers after New York lawmakers agreed to scale back its cost and accept other conditions, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Republican and Democratic senators struck a tentative deal to approve an aid bill for Ground Zero workers. Above, construction continues at Ground Zero Dec. 9.
.Lawmakers for both parties met late into Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning to work on the details of the revised $4.3 billion package, a reduction from the original $7.2 billion legislation.

The bill would provide five years of health-care coverage and re-open a compensation program for those who became ill after working on the toxic debris pile or living and working nearby.

The final language is still being crafted, but a vote by unanimous consent could come Wednesday afternoon.
Sounds like a fair compromise to me. Allah forbid we get Dems and Republicans to compromise, instead of just accepting whatever the Dems want... right?

Re: 9/11 First responders speak out on 'Daily Show'

This is waht some people in here have been whining like little girls about...

Exclusive: Senate Strikes Deal on 9/11 Bill - ABC News
"I'll stand in the way of anything that doesn't make sense and doesn't spend our money wisely, so you know, it doesn't matter what the issue is, we're in such a hole, Jon, that we don't have the luxury of not getting things right," Coburn told ABC News' Jonathan Karl. "And so we've come to an agreement that costs less, doesn't allow double-dipping, doesn't allow exorbitant lawyer fees, and we've worked it out and so we're going to take care of the folks, but we're going to do it in a way that doesn't punish the people that are going to pay the bill."

"But the way you've been hammered on this, standing against the heroes of 9/11," replied Karl.

"I'm used to being hammered," Coburn said. "I'm not standing against them at all. I'm standing for us as America, the realization that we have to do things efficiently and economically. We've worked out a deal now that spends a whole lot less money, accomplishes exactly the same thing, and does it in a way that protects our future. Every bill should have to go through that and the fact that they don't is a problem. That's why we're $14 trillion in debt."

"So I don't mind taking the heat," he continued. "You know, as a physician I care about those people. As a citizen, I care about the firefighters of my own city and every other city. The fact is you can still do it right. So you take all the heat, but you still it get done. So what we need is more people taking more heat so we get the right things done."

"Everybody's come to an agreement. We've got a handshake. We're waiting for the paperwork. And it'll be a done deal by the end of the day. But had we not done that, we wouldn't have had it and they wouldn't have had it until next year. So the fact is we accomplished their goals and we accomplished protecting the future of the country."

The Senate just passed the revised bill... unanimously.

This... is what bi-partisan cooperation is supposed to look like people.

The 9/11 responders would have been helped months ago if the Dems had conducted open meetings and worked with Republicans on this bill, rather than trying to ram it through with no discussion.

Damn shame it took them until the end of the term to figure out how to actually compromise and be bi-partisan.
