Yes... it's so arrogant. Especially when your next statement is:
"Mr. Liu Xiaobo is far more deserving of this award than I was."
It's called setting the stage for grand recognition. Humbling your own status in order to recognize the greater achievement of another is nothing ground-breaking. These reactions are so lame because most of you would agree with the quote above, yet can't resist a chance at a jab or two.
The same way, actually.... If you start a speech or statement meant to honor someone else by talking about yourself, it's arrogant. It's fine to include the anecdote in there at some point as reference... but to begin with it smacks of arrogance.
