Homeland Security seizes domain names

The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.



ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags.

The sites are replaced with a note from the government: "This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations."


For instance, 2009jersey.com, 51607.com, and amoyhy.com have each been seized.

One of the site owners told TorrentFreak that his site was shut down without any notice or warning.

The effort come as Congress considers the Combatting Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA). Critics, including Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) say it is too heavy-handed. He has vowed to put a formal hold on the bill.

I forgot liberals dont know the meaning of fascist seeing how many times they called Bush one then supported the same type of behavior out of Obama.

May I ask, didnt the libs call Bush one for Gitmo and didnt Obama claim he was shutting it down yet it is still open?

It's sad that the Dept. of Homeland Security doesn't have bigger fish to fry. The poor money hungry industry is suffering a few losses due to kids downloading their mediocre products over the net.

I labeled myself very liberal, and yet you have no idea how I think, or what I define as very liberal.

This is what the problem in American politics today, everyone look, it's right here. This feeling that it is us against them, that everyone who thinks different are evil bastards who all think alike, and that they must lose or otherwise the world is over. Seriously, if you wanted to actually understand, and talk with people who disagree with you then you might learn something, and grow. But instead you want to play these partisan games which help no one.

It's interesting that you blame liberals and Obama for this, and yet the only critic that article mentions is a Democrat, and makes no mentions of Republicans.

The bill was sponsored by a dem (Sen. Patrick Leahy) and 7 of the 18 co-sponsors were cons.

The bill was passed, unanimously, by the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which 7 were cons (not necessarily co-sponsors).

Guess we'd better call China and increase that order of brown shirts...:lol:

Liberals arent hard to figure out. They stand for, and their many groups that fall under the header of liberalism (socialism, communism, marxism, anarchy just to name a few) everything that is wrong with America. So to group them all together and you get one form or another of anti-Americanism. Oh they will claim they love America, but not the America it is but the America they want it to be. Love her or leave her. You change her to be something she is not, then she will fail.

So you just essentially proved my point. It's clear that you judge all Liberals by the outspoken few extremists. Though, it isn't surprising since those extreme Liberals judge Conservatives just as harshly. Really, you are no better than those whom you base your stereotypes on.

No, see, this is what Your Star is talking about. You have no idea what it is that liberals actually believe. You've listen to Hannity et. al and let them TELL you what liberals believe. They're wrong. You're wrong. Instead of making vague general statements that can't be substantiated, why don't you actually try responding to what people say around here? Please explain to me how socialism, communism, and marxism, all of which are statist philosophies, are coexisted in with anarchy, which advocates elimination of formal states.

And how have you been able to attribute any one of those views to me based on what you've read on this forum?

Also, it's funny to note that marxism, and anarchy are SO different, that to contribute both of them to one political movement is too funny.

Here is what is wrong with conservatives. They tend to bunch a group of words together that have negative connotations as if though they all mean the same thing. My suggestion to you is study what socialism, communisum, and marxism is. Anarchy in particular however makes no sense and you would be the first conservative on this fourm I have seen to used "anarchy" for "big government loving" democrats.

On the other hand, the tea party movement would ascribe much closer to the notion of anarchy wouldn't you say?

Anyways I don't like Homeland Security as a whole and believe the entire thing top to bottom should be dismantled.

No one cares what you define as very liberal, those labels aren't up to you. They are up to public opinion and are generally known. It's up to you pick the one closest to your beliefs.

If anything, this will probably prompt the EU or UN or some other international group to start up their own version of ICANN, and pretty much everyone will immediately jump on it because nobody wants the US to have unilateral control over the internet like that. Right now we have a situation where a German citizen is unable to (easily) access a Swedish website because the American government issued a court order. Yeah, that'll go over well.

Probably the only reason this hasn't already been done is because the US has been more or less playing nice up until this point.
 
America does claim authority (via the Commerce Department) to the Internet, but it does not mean absolute power. The FCC applies policy and other agencies entitle themselves to monitoring or "executing" said policies. The authority of the FCC to even regulate a hint of the Internet is still up for debate. The bizarre fact, however, is that the Federal Government (with the exception of ICANN and the Military) are pretty incapable of "running the internet".
