Yeah I'm so out of touch with reality I'm failing to see how offering kids salad is the government taking over my childrens minds

I'm wondering if that same Government will be providing reports to the American people on how much of that salad being offered is eaten vs. thrown away. I'm guessing not. So what's next? Forcing kids to eat the salad or another program where salad is moulded into mcnugget looking chunks?

Oh please man, I thought liberals were the kings of the "What Ifs".

It's a frickin Salad bar being offered. If it doesn't work whatever, that's the fault of the Kids and the Parents, clearly they've been taught or conditioned to believe that Sloppy Joes is superior eating.

Why have salad bars when you could just force them to eat healthy food. Seriously, lunch food is crap, and I'm not talking about taste, I'm talking about in calories. There's not that big of a difference from a McDonalds meal. Make them eat healthy at school, or have their parents pack them their lunch.

So are you agreeing with me that it's a waste of time and money or are you disputing the part where they'll be forced to eat salad at some point under the "General Welfare" clause?

I think everyone's imagining an open-end buffet for the kids to pick from - with a sneeze guard like at Sizzlers or something. I'm not sure how every school does it but my kid's school don't do it quite that way.

You know how the regular lunch line is?
There's a server - the child is on the *other* side of the glass with a tray - the child picks the food - the server puts the food on a small plate and hands it to the kid. *or* there's are small plates of pre-fixed foods sitting for the kid to take.

When I was a kid they had this same setup. Well - the 'salad bar' is a 2nd line that the kids can choose to go into. They can go through the first line - which is a traditional line (sloppy joe, hamburger, pizza, whatever they're serving) and then they can get an apple, an apricot or a salad plate with tomatoes - served *to them* like the 1st line. it's just a different variety of foods.

The kids don't actually handle the food and serve theirself like you would do at a buffet bar.

Same effort - same system - but a wider variety of foods to eat.

If the kids don't *want* the food they don't *get* the food.
If they *get* the food - whatever it is - they're encouraged to *eat* the food.

It's NOT a big deal. My kids REALLY like fresh fruits and veggies. Especially my older son - he loves olives and having other things with his food.

No one is being forced to eat it
Everyone is encourage in the 1st or 2nd line to take ONLY what they will eat.

Believe it or not - there's ALWAYS going to be waste no matter WHAT is being served - hot dogs and apples will either be eaten wholey, partially or not at all. Live with it.

You know what's wasteful? NOT giving kids much of a choice.
Some kids don't like corn dogs or apples - if you give a kid who DOESN'T like certain foods *no choice* then they *surprise* won't be eating that food at all and it'll go into the trash.

“Perhaps, then, the people you should be getting pissed at are ALL THE PEOPLE who ****ed their health and their children's health - and then demanded the government *do something about ti* for so long that the government actually started to listen.

These are the same people who cried out for the government to 'fix the insurance companies' - and that led to the passing of AACHA.

That's actually why I support such measures - because now we're ****ed out of millions because of the AACHA and other measures - all because some people were loud mouthed and whiny and unwilling to accept the results of their own decisions in life.”

I’m not pissed at anyone and I have no idea who the AACHA is. I do believe that those who have “****ed thier their health and their children’s health” are on their own.

I don’t owe them anything and neither do you.

I used to smoke and someday I may pay a price for it. But the price to be paid will be mine. It should not include you or anyone else.

It costs $7,000 just get one started, multiply that by the number of schools that don't have one. The entire school lunch system is a bloated mismanaged program. So they'll now offer a salad bar next to the pizza bar. If you want to offer real nutrition, then that's all that should be on the menu otherwise it's a waste of money.

We had salad bars in junior high and highschool. I must have had one every other day. Always with low fat dressing. I think it's a good choice for kids. I know that ours were refilled two or three times daily during lunch hour from kids eating salads. Of course if you pile on ranch dressing it isn't very good for you but that's quickly solved with low fat dressings. Even a salad with low fat dressing tastes better than alot of the other stuff they served.

That's actually how my two schools did it. They had hand washing stations when you walk in to the cafeteria and everyone washed there hands then you could go through the hot food line or you could step to the salad bar that also had apples and bananas and stuff and had a lunch lady monitoring it making sure no one was making a mess of it and that everything was filled. Worked well for us.
