Colbert to testify at House immigration hearing: report

I wonder if the message that he gives is lost on people...we need these illegal immigrants to do the jobs no American would do for pay no American would accept. God bless brown slavery...

They're paid and they took the job willingly, so calling it slavery is hyperbolic and only inflames the situation further.

But that "take our jobs" campaign DOES have a point. We've got very high unemployment, but still Americans wont do these jobs. Because they're ****ty jobs and the pay is horrid, but damnit we want cheap apples so we'll hire these guys from Mexico who don't have any other options. You can blame the lack of border security, political correctness, or whatever, but the reality is that these people cross the border because there's a job. There's demand for cheap labor that we wont fill ourselves, and we're unwilling to pay higher prices for food so we put up with the "problem," and it gives us a convenient scapegoat to blame for our economic woes.

I'll make sure to tell the hispanic groups to stop using the term.

People 'wont' take those jobs because they have squat for work ethics and we have created a handout system that allows them the luxury of 'choosing' not to. I would bet if it was work or starve, we could change some of those folks' minds.

All that being said...I dont have anything against the illegal immigrants. i understand their plight and Ive said it on more than one occasion...if I lived in that ****hole I'd escape and find a way to provide for my family. Ive also said I would gladly keep those 20-30 million hard working illegals and send mexico 20-30 million of our crippled and dependent pets and let them enjoy mexicos socialist utopia.

I DO have a problem with the "we need those people here to do the job no American would do, for pay no Americans would accept." Most importantly what that means is those hard working and intelligent individuals that COULD be doctors, scientists, etc are here mowing my lawn.

Yeah, all those people losing their homes are just LOVING this socialist paradise. They choose not to work because it's just easier this way.

They would take them if unemployment was not neverending

He was only in character for around 5-8 mins. Then he was serious. Still those mins are costly and while it is funny stuff? He shoulda left the comedy outta of it period. This is serious ****!

so let me get this straight.

the democrats in congress don't have the time to decide on whether or not to cut what taxes (a mere couple of months before Jan 2011, nobody knows what the tax rates will be).
the democrats in congress don't have time to actually decide whether or not to secure the border as the situation descends deeper and deeper into violent chaos
the democrats in congress don't have time to even present a friggin budget....

but they do have time to import a comedian whose shtick is to pretend to be a particularly obnoxious right-winger.

when we are pushing double-digit unemployment.

right.

well, this ought to make a dandy campaign ad here in about ten minutes.

Let me get this striaight, you think a 5 minute testimony is enough to make this big of a fuss about?
And more importantly, you think a House Judiciary subcommittee has the power to do all those things? You act like the entire Congress was present, no it was an incomplete subcommittee on immigration which focus for the day was on migrant labor.
Lastly, he wasn't invited by anyone in Congress to do this. He was invited by the UFW, United Farm Workers, President because he was part of a program to work as a laborer.

Although it was obvious to anyone that he'd speak and act like this, you wouldn't be one to support baring an individual from speaking in front of Congress simply because what people think they are going to do?

Remember, know facts then make opinion.

Yeah, all those people losing their homes are just LOVING this socialist paradise. They choose not to work because it's just easier this way.
Many if not most of those people losing their homes bought homes they couldnt afford. They overobligated themselves. They rolled credit cards and car payments into their homeloans and ignored the adjustable rates. And then they blamed the banks. And BTW...you really...REALLY want to compare the US and mexico as 'socialist utopias'? You should try living there...working there. You would PROBABLY realize soon there is a REASON why 20-30 million of their citizens have escaped that ****hole.

They would take them if unemployment was not neverending

But if dems stop the gravy train they will lose the vote support of their crippled dependent little pets.

That someone in the democratic party thought that this stunt was a good idea shows how out of touch with the problems in this country and it's people was the message. After the schtick was over it was apparent to everyone watching as well as the members how big of a turd in the punch bowl this really was.

I have no problem with that. Let them get elected on how they vote not how they give our money away

Did you read my posts, or any facts about this for that matter? He wasn't invited by any congressmen, he was invited by the United Farm Workers, who after being given time to use for testimony can choose to use it how they wish. Of course the Congressmen can request the statements in writing or simply ask, or even force, a person to leave. However he spoke for FIVE MINUTES.

If you want to talk and educate yourself about government waste, trust me, there are bigger things than FIVE MINUTES of time in front of a congressional sub committee.

I don't even understand why this has even become an issue, its so tiny compared to everything else one could look at.

. Relevance? How or why he was there or for what amount of time doesn't diminish the damage of is "in character" appearance conveyed. That and his schtick flopped... I mean he died in there bad. While I appreciate your need to keep facts straight, the facts in this case are irrelevant.

who's tailing about government waste? I'm talking about Democrats disconnect with the American people. For someone criticizing others on reading their posts, you apparently didn't read mine or you added your own meaning. Perhaps you should take your own advice.
I don't even understand why this has even become an issue, its so tiny compared to everything else one could look at.
Government stupidity and disconnect with the American people especially during an extended economic downturn is always an issue, let alone 6 weeks before an election. Really... You don't understand or you're intentionally being obtuse?

Granted the guy is really smart and is well-informed on all sorts of issues but WHY?

To bring attention to the immigration issue that everyone wants to ignore?

I get a kick out of Colbert on his show but as is par for the course his humor fell flat in public. What was that dinner a few years back that Bush attended where he was also flat?

Really? So if you only get 40 percent of your previous wages and you're about to lose your home you'd rather stay on unemployment? Come on!

Under your blind ignorance you expect these people to move to California from wherever they live in the U.S. (which in their present situation they can't afford) and make wages that wouldn't even make their house payment. Man you self rigthteous righties just kill me.

BTW I know lots of individuals that would love to get back to work including my twin brother who was comptroller for 25 years. He sends out 40 to 50 resumes a week with very few response and no jobs. He can't make it on the umemployment he's on even though he is at the highest amount. My parents have to help him or he will lose his house. He has no credit card debt and is quite frugal, and his house payment is at a fixed rate. He's not giving up but is sitting for CPA exam soon in hopes it will make him more marketable.

Has he tried Burger King as a supplement to his unemployment?

I seriously doubt that he has...... probably won't settle for any job below his old comptroller position.

Well if we are throwing out facts I heard he gave his speech in a Mao Suit.

You are wrong

Stephen Colbert cracks jokes at Capitol Hill hearing - Political Intelligence - A national political and campaign blog from The Boston Globe - Boston.com

Colbert was invited to testify by the chairwoman of the House subcommittee on immigration, US Representative Zoe Lofgren, Democrat of California, who had appeared with him on The Colbert Report on Comedy Central to draw attention to the plight of illegal immigrant farm laborers.

The show almost didn't go on. Colbert had barely seated himself and prepared to testify when US Representative John Conyers, Democrat of Michigan, asked him to leave. Conyers mentioned the slew of reporters packing the hearing room and asked Colbert to submit written testimony and leave so the committee could get on with its work.

If they did not have unemployment they would do those jobs to feed their family

That's not out of the ordinary. And it seems as though your facts were not only irrelevant but also wrong. (Hat tip: ptif219)

If you work the money you make will lower your unemployment. This is why people only accept jobs that meet the salaries of their old jobs.

My mistake. But still, facts are never irrelevant otherwise one has no reasonable basis for an opinion.

After his 5 minutes of nonsense...

He was subsequently asked to leave...

The look on his face was the funniest thing he's done in quite a while.:lamo

Apparently many lawmakers were unimpressed and unimmused by Colbert's act. Of course they were stupid enough to invite him. Nevertheless, the fact that hazlnut finds his testimony useful, is telling.
