White House: New York Times report '100 percent wrong'

By MIKE ALLEN & ANDY BARR | 9/20/10 8:36 AM EDT Updated: 9/20/10 11:48 AM EDT

The White House is pushing back hard against a New York Times report that the president's political team is considering a national ad campaign that would cast the GOP as taken over by tea party extremists. (See: Tea party dominates the narrative)

The story is 100 percent inaccurate, a White House official told POLITICO.

Times Washington Bureau Chief Dean Baquet counters that the "piece is accurate.

But White House complaints have had some effect. Although the Times has not posted a correction or otherwise acknowledged making changes to the piece, it dialed back its claims overnight, changing the headline and the lead sentence of the story to de-emphasize the notion that the White House is weighing an anti-GOP ad campaign.

Re: White House: New York Times report '100 percent wrong'

There's another angle to this that just occurred to me. Keep in mind that it's pure speculation on my part, that I base on the NYT history when it comes to political reporting.

Maybe the Times did in fact either fabricate this story, or used information that was not very credible, but did so to try and help the administration. Instead of it being written as an attack, maybe this was the Times way of suggesting what they feel is a winning strategy that the administration can use against the GOP in the midterms and in the 2012 election. Or perhaps it was their way of telling their readers what they believe about the GOP, and didn't think the administration would acknowledge the story.

    Just a thought.

It was likely a trial balloon floated by some administration members to see how people reacted. Now that they've got an idea of what people think, they can disclaim all responsibility for the story.

I hope you noticed that the story said the "tea party extremists."

There has never been one shred of evidence that there has been any tea party extremists.

The 5th Column Lame Stream Media never really cover the true attitude of those who attend the rallies but Olberman and that gay guy Mathews with the thrill up his leg keep up rule Number 8 of the Alenski Rules for radicals.

Rule 8. says in part Keep the pressure on. Use different tactics and actions and use all events of the period for your purpose.

Well they keep up with the same lies as instructed. The thing is the message got out no mater how much the White House says no not use.

I would not be surprised to hear Obama refer to the false flap and he will be sure to use the key phrase call the Tea Party Extremists.

If you repeat a lie often enough the dumb ass people will believe it.

I hope you're speaking in general here. I'd hate to think you - someone I've considered to be fair and astute - would think in terms so partisan! Cause if the latter is the case, all you need do is read the headlines provided by "niftydrifty" in post #4 above.

I'm not sure how my statement was at all partisan. The practice of floating an idea as a trial balloon to the press and then disclaiming responsibility is incredibly common and not really objectionable. I was theorizing, not criticizing.

This is more than likely true, Obama administration is not the first nor the last to use the NYT in this manner.

    Fair enough.
