Found an awesome SATELLITE IMAGE of the rally supplied by Geoeye.
It's a big image, so wait for it to load...
I'm convinced there were more than 212,000 people there, but we'll never know... besides those being crunched together as closely as possible, those who couldn't hear or see anything sometimes branched off into other buildings (bars, museums, etc) to watch the rally on TV.
Article about the rally:
"There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, it to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution." óJohn Adams
Nice pic, I too am convinced the estimate is low.
does anyone really give a crap which rally was bigger? Isn't the message of a ralley more important than how many people did or did not attend?
No. The bigger one wins, duh.
You're supposed to save that pic for the posts that really deserve it you know.
