Or, maybe, you can take him at his word:

"It honestly just took me longer than it’s taken other people I know to accept this part of my life," Mehlman told POLITICO in a telephone interview.

"Over the past several months, I’ve done that. I’ve particularly done that by talking to friends and family, and telling them the truth. And it’s been a positive experience."

Why? In what way could this damage the GOP?

You know, something doesn't look right here. I think it was the way he swished his wrist as he was saying that. Zorro, the Gay Blade, also noticed that he shakes his hips like a sissy boy.

I am just glad the man had the integrity to stand up for who he is instead of skulking around airport bathrooms or hitting up senate errand boys.

Actually, the perfect time to come out would have been when he was working on GW's campaign OR when he was RNC chair. Waiting until you are a political nobody to come out doesn't prove anything.

Why is he required to do this on anyone's schedule but his own?

If he had come out then, I believe his political career would have been over. What I didn't like was his pushing anti-gay themes during 2004, but that is in the past. And he still does hold some sway in the Republican party, which he just said he was going to use to campaign for getting the GOP to recognize that gays are welcome in the party.
