John Bush Arrested For Protesting Outside Free Speech Zone At U.T. Austin

I'm convinced that the public school funded by public moneys has to follow the Constitution argument is the way to go. In fact, there's so many public events on a public school campus I find this whole trespassing argument to be completely devoid of any reality whatsoever.

You positively CAN travel freely onto and off of a public university campus.

that it is state owned gives no right to the citizen to exercise its rights thereon as if it were their own property for their own use
the government will administer it as the state sees fit

Historically that ain't true.

now if you insist that i am wrong, i want you to test your theory when the closest public elementary school soon opens for the school year, and go personally pass out literature that would be inappropriate for school children even tho it would not be inappropriate for adult citizens
when we quit seeing your posts, we will all find out your theory was found wrong

Children don't have the full rights as adults do.
With that comes special protections for them.

It's been pointed out that, this be an example of apples and canaries.

the only difference is the age of the students and the curriculum being taught
but try again ... i enjoy the easy target practice
Glad you enjoy the target practice. Now try hitting the target.
Apples and oranges are both fruits. One is orange and the other isn't. The consitency of the fruit and skin are quite different as well. For the purpose of this conversation lets stick to discussing the apple--actually I'll makle this more understandable; lets discuss the material being given in this situation on a public college campus.

You know, I saw a lot of people supporting the arrests of Liberals after George Bush created the concept of free speech zones. Where was the outcry from them then?

Free speech zones were anti free speech then, and they are anti free speech now. Obama, for all his talk, looks a lot like George Bush.

Oh, look at DAN! Showing those EVIL Republican's created "Free Speech Zones"

BS. Free Speech Zones have been on US Campuses for longer then "Dubya" was a household name.

damn, i thought it was mostly hyperbole about rights being stripped away, but ****, this is ludicrous.

If you weren't a "Very Liberal" person glued to the MSM Feeding information, you'd know that "Free Speech" zones have been a part of COLLEGE CAMPUSES for a lot longer then 2001. But do keep repeating the lie "Bush created them" You look most foolish. LIBERAL College Campuses started the trend.

Oh how do you people feel now?

He said nothing of the sort.

What the heck, did you even read what he wrote?

wow, i love it when people tell me what i know, what TV i watch, and what i've said, shame you couldn't have been more wrong.

i never said bush set them up, i don't watch american TV, and this is the first time i've heard of them, so perhaps you'll forgive my ignorance.

Yes, whining about freedoms stripped. In Obvious shock this "really happens".

yes, i was shocked, i have only being paying close attention to what happens in America since i joined this site, so get off your bloody high horse.

If they are completely privately owned and take no public funds, then yes, they have a right to limit who enters their property, who can say what, and who can say it where. If they take one single penny of public funds, the 1st amendment rules.

Free speech zones anywhere on public property violates the 1st amendment.... I can see the need for a permit to hold a rally, protest, etc. but the permit has to be free, and it has to be issued immediately, or it violates our rights under the Constitution.

The man was on still on property owned by the university. I'm not allowed to break into Section 8 housing. I'm not allowed in public parks after dark.

BTW....... It's our right to "freedom of speech", not "free speech".

Who cares?

BTW 2.…. The first amendment only restricts Congress from passing laws that restrict Freedom of speech….. It says nothing about the States.

14th Amendment.

No, but you have the right to stand on the public curb outside of my house and do the same thing.

COuld it be that maybe just maybe your ever so powerful and complete 'knowledge' of the rules and laws ant UT is wrong? BTW...they ASKEd the group to go to the PUBLIC CURB 100 yards away...but that wouldnt allow him and his group to be the ever so annoying assholes they were striving to be and they refused...so...he was arrested. Because...hun...APPARENTLY there are SOME laws that you arent aware of.

All those things you've cited are for legitimate public safety reasons.

Relegating a group of people to a free speech zone, to get them out of the way isn't the same.

Even with tax dollars, the park is still the township's, and the housing is still the resident's. It's the university's property They have a right to kick some asshole off of it.

Sitting on a park bench 5 mnutes after the sun sets while waiting for a friend isn't a safety concern.

That's true, my friend was ticketed in a state park because we were coming out after closing.
I broke my knee on the way up and had to crab walk most of the way down, took forever.

Some people are dickheads, still though the underlying reason is safety.

 free speech zones, ain't that a violation of your Bill of Rights?

No it isn't. You still get to utter free speech. LOL. Get ready for "Free Speech Zones 2.0", which will be located inside of locked basements.

First, I'm not your 'hun'.

Second, "laws ant UT" assumingly means, "laws at UT." Responding with that assumption, there can't be laws that infringe on one's constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful assembly in a public area.

Third, the curb may be PUBLIC but so was the PUBLIC campus. Both spots are equal in terms of being public.

Fortunately, there are no laws against being an asshole, the reason probably being that the term is a bit relative.

I would say that next to the unemployed people that are some how geniuses on the economy and capitalism, and bloggers that are somehow brilliant scietinsts that know everything there is to know (or that they can read on Wikipedia) about deepwater drilling procedures, people that profess to know what is or isnt against the law are just about the funniest people I know. OBVIOUSLY...you are right and they are wrong.

You can DISAGREE with the arrest all day long. You can believe he SHOULD have the right to be a self agrandizing asshole on any public land he chooses without fear of running afoul of the law. Believeing it to the case does not MAKE it the case.

We really dont need to discuss your relatives. Apples...trees...and usually they fall fairly close...

No.

This crap has been going on for years. UTHSCSA has a little 20x20 square for protesters. Yet still we have people blathering about "BUSH'S FREE SPEECH ZONES". /boggles the mind.

It was in the middle of town and smaller than a square block. Crossing the street is more dangerous, and safety concern or not, it still shows that I'm allowed to get kicked off of public land.
