In his "I have a dream" speech, Martin Luther King looked towards a day when people would be judged on the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. In Tennessee's 9th District, this is exactly what happened. Why would black voters overwhelmingly pick a White Jewish man over one of their own? Because, it seems to me, that they chose content of character over skin color. Kudos to them. There is no place in America for racism, whether it comes from whites or blacks. This is the lesson for today.The former longtime mayor of Memphis, who unabashedly campaigned for voters to send him to Congress because he is black, was overwhelmingly defeated by the white incumbent in Thursday's Democratic primary.
