    Why?

We refuse to. My wife makes just enough that we can eek by. I have to make changes, we've cut services, altered our routines and looked for ways to save $$ and make her paycheck stretch. And that's WITH the kids here, an added expense we normally do not have.
Bet you do. I can guarantee you that you have a better resume than me. Lets see I had to drop out of college due to being too poor to afford it, no prior work experience, and the best thing I've got going for me is some good grades in some AP classes in high school. For your family's sake I hope you have a better resume than me, and I hope you find work. Sucks being poor.

I grew up latchkey with a mother who also dropped out of college, but to support a household and an 8 year old child by working low-paying factory jobs.

I graduated college, including an MBA, on grants, scholarships, and more loan money than I could possibly use (and had to turn down a good 75% of it).

"Too poor to afford college" carries absolutely no merit to me, and I will call someone out every last time.

Yes, it does suck to be poor. However, there are ways to fix it. Truth is you just didn't want to do it badly enough.

Unfortunately no. If I was I would probably be in school by now, but I basically live in a town with a population smaller than Mayberry. I think about 200 people? Not sure, but around that number. Thats also why I think I haven't found a job yet, hardly anyplace near me to work at.

Edit @ Gipper, all those grants, and scholarships are alot harder to get with the economy the way it is. It's a little discouraging, but it is what it is. I'm more than likely going to swallow my pride, and go to a University of Phoenix type school. Yeah, it will be like going back to middle school, but it's better than doing nothing.

    damn, of course that's why.

you should be able to get some grants, have you applied? work ANYWHERE you can, doing whatever you can, and learn from whatever you do. don't be picky at this stage.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely not picky at this point. I remember coming out of high school saying that I would never work at a fast food joint, but I've lost every bit of that thinking. Hell I'd work at a slaughter house at this point. And like I said, I'm probably just going to a just sign up type college just so I can keep going to school, while earning money so I can go to a real school.

I have little college, my Veteran Status, and a great attitude. I'm also prone to typos on forums, thus I could never get paid to be a forum poster.

Look, I wish you well, I DO. I hope you land a job, and things go well for you, I DO.

My thing, and it's not personal, I don't believe in gov't social welfare programs. What were supposed to be last resort catch you before you end up dead or a vagabond have become life for far too many people. It angers me, it saddens me.

You may not realize it, but you are trapped by the system. You think you MUST have the Gov't to survive. Maybe YOU DO, but far too many don't, but haven't realized it yet.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

I know who and WHAT they are. They are NOT the only corrupt members in congress and the house.

The difference is .... Democrats create social programs; Republicans have no problem stealing from the poor to give to the rich; however, they complain bitterly when they have to pay taxes which support welfare.

    It's absolutely hypocritical.

I don't get how I'm trapped? The fact is that without the food stamps the roof over our head would go away. It's not that we think it would, it would. Thats the cold hard facts. In an ideal society would we have welfare programs, no. But we don't live in an ideal society, I think welfare needs reform, but getting rid of it would do more harm than good.
