This false reporting of the Mission Accomplished banner was a turning point at home. It was the start of treasonous Democrats starting to attack the troops and our president. It got the idiocy ball rolling, emboldened our enemies, and raised the cost of American treasure and blood.

The idea popped up in one of the meetings aboard the ship preparing for its homecoming and thought it would be good to have a banner, 'Mission Accomplished.' The sailors then asked if the White House could get the sign made. ... The banner signified the successful completion of the ship's deployment," Cmdr. Chun continued noting that the Abraham Lincoln was deployed 290 days, longer than any other nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in history.

It was during this time that the Lincoln was ordered to the Persian Gulf to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This forced the Navy to extend Lincoln's stay from 20 January 2003 to 6 May 2003. The news of this extension was delivered to the ship's crew on New Years morning by the then Battlegroup Commander, RADM Kelly, with the famous phrase, "We don't need to be home holding our loved ones, we need to be here holding the line. Really, I had no idea! Thank you so much, zimmer, for telling me. I think our German journalists over here should really take an example of America's quality journalism. They should watch FOX News closely for a while, look, listen and learn! Because, you know, I was told that the only place where you see the truth and get facts about how reality really is, is FOX News (all other sources twist facts, make up stories out of thin air, have a liberal bias and are run by elitist liberal college professors who have never fired a gun with their own hands, are sipping latte and orange juice instead of coke and beer, and thus generally hate America -- and that's a huge conspiracy by a communist network of traitors to take over!). I know your media very well, having been an avid consumer of it.
For instance: The press recently reported the suicides in China;s factories building Apple products. They failed to note the suicide rate was lower than the national average for that size population.

Another: I never recalled hearing about Judicial Watch in the German Press, but when they began investigating Bush early in his term, the German Press all of a sudden began citing them... despite the fact JW had chased Clinton's illegalities for years.

Another: Paul Kirchoff rightly stated the German government should simplify the tax code and cut 400 laws in that pursuit. Schroeder was getting tanked... Merkel's numbers were at about 50%. What happened? The press turned on Merkel! After Schroeder had failed to cut the unemployment in half as promised... in fact he doubled it.

It is a sad excuse for public information. It's propaganda... not any different from our press, but we do have alternatives... talk radio and FOXNEWS. Und Deutsch-e-land?

Is Germany more left-leaning than the US? Yes, it is. Does it mean that's because we are sheeples brainwashed by a propaganda machine? No, not at all.

People are holding more left-leaning views because of many, especially cultural and historical reasons. Does that mean these opinions are illegitimate? Not at all. Unless you believe left-leaning views are illegitimate or invalid by default (and that's what your wild rambling seems to suggest, that you completely lack tolerance for differing opinions). By the same token, it's just as correct claiming "Germany is more left than the US" as "The US is so much more to the right to Germany". Who are you to say one is more legitimate than the other? And in fact, we have a wide variety of opinions in our media here. And at very least, a higher degree of respect in the debate than in many US medias seems standard here, even if that alone doesn't say much about quality yet. But I assume you have good and bad media here, as you have in the US.

You should stop attacking arguments for the person who advances them, instead of their inherent merit. That's called ad hominem fallacy and well poisoning. An argument is not good or bad because it's "left" or "conservative", but when it's logically sound and can be backed up, regardless of the side that advances it. And when you do that it's neither a sign of civility nor respect, least of all tolerance of different opinions.

It's true, I disagree with Bush. But that I found his "mission accomplished"-stunt funny is the least reason for that. In fact, I believe even Bush supporters may find it funny and laugh about it, and I think if Obama did a similar thing, I'd find it just as funny and laugh about it. You'll see that I equally expressed amusement by Obama's statement "to kick ass". Really, you should relax a little and consider all this less as a partisan war, but nice bickering among people who can respectfully disagree, yet share a laugh sometimes.

No ill will, really. I may not agree with much of what you believe, but I don't think all Americans are like that, I won't jump to broad allegiations about the state of your media in general, or question anything you say is illegitimate by default. Could you please return that favor?

But for the record, my first reply does not display my actual opinions, but I tried to respond with irony to what I thought was a serious attack -- although it may have escaped me if zimmer was just playing a prank on me. I hope I could make clear what I believe with my later replies.

Yeah, there are differences between our peoples. We have a different kind of culture, history and society than you have, so it's natural that it reflects on political stances too. I see you are pretty fond of Bush, and it's interesting to see this kind of enthusiasm for a President. For example, we hardly have that kind of thing here. Our Chancellors are more or less boring, most of the time, and even most of their supporters don't adore them so much they react so huffy on even the slightest sign of criticism (or even a cheap joke). Apparently, that's a difference in political culture.

Also, we have idiots over here in Germany who don't know much about America, and out of a mix of lack of familiarity, arrogance and ignorance, they think they are better than Americans and think in stereotypes, accuse Americans of being brainwashed by a far-right media and suggest they are all far-right, almost fascist nuts who cannot think for themselves. Look, I'm as patriotic as the next guy but you can't seriously puke over a mission accomplished joke. I mean, come on, it's a classic. Every USian knows that the banner was for the boat, it's old news... but it's still funny. I hit lefties with the "mission accomplished" action all the time, what's the harm?

You don't need to tell me about sacrifice for country. How many friends did you lose as a soldier? I lost two and I was very close to one of them (he had a wife and three young kids).

I laugh a lot, especially with the idiocy that shoots around here from the left.
It's one of the reasons I participate... for the laughs.
I laugh because I used to be a leftist, and know how far their heads are shoved up their asses.

When it comes to the military, war, and ****ting on the President during a war and that crap-a-thon is directed at his military efforts... using it as a springboard for more disgusting crap to come... that's where the humor stops for me.
