Hmm... I didn't take that response to mean it was invalide because of Imus - I understood it to mean Imus was fired yet Maher is not due to an understanding or MIS-understanding of the comedy I guess. More appropriately it's showing a underlying comment of bias and not suggesting invalidity as in a tu quoque.

If they were both employed by the same company, and Imus got fired, but Bill didn't. Then that'd be a fairer accusation IMO. But it was his company that fired him (I don't even think he should've been fired myself). Bill works for a totally different employer. It's an example of a company being hyper-sensitive out of fear of losing ratings (just like Viacom with South Park), not real "hypocrisy".

When people say "by that logic," what they really mean is "let me extrapolate what you said to a ridiculous conclusion and show it as evidence of an opinion you don't actually hold."

What was offensive about the remark/joke was not that Maher has noticed that we have a black president and isn't sure how to refer to him but how he thinks a black president should act. He stated in the joke that he wanted a black president that would pull back his jacket to reveal the pistol in his belt to influence his negotiations. Doesn't that infer that all blacks are gangsters? It sure would be construed to say that if it came out of a conservatives mouth.

Of course Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton resemble that sterotype so I can understand where he's coming from.

I feel certain that this may come as an enormous shock to you but there are many folk who choose not to watch the likes of Leno, Letterman at all at any time.
And while I have heard of Leno and Letterman I have never heard of Mahler.
 
Mahler needs to crawl back under whatever rock originally spawned him. He's so irrelevant and ridiculous he makes Adam Sandler look dignified.
